Indoor poppy starts
    #6083179 - 09/20/06 05:35 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I bought a package of 12 small peat pots, with the intention of using them to start seedlings indoors before transferring outside, and I'd like to start some poppy plants with them.

My plan is to place the pots on the windowsill of an east-facing window, where  they can get plenty of morning sunlight without being subjected to a lot of heat. When they get big enough to go outside (and by then the climate will be favorable), I can transplant them into the ground or into pots.

I was thinking of just doing a test run with 3 gig's and 3 persian blue. I figure that if I can get gig's to work this way then I'm all set for a personal emergency painkiller stash  and if I can't get gig's to work then I figure that I might still get the persian blue to work.

They don't. Some people have had okay success, I never have.

I also have heard mixed responses to how well poppies grow indoors.

you don't need to transplant plants in peat pots, they are biodegradable you plant the whole pot, so no transplanting necessary. As for growing indoors it can be done, but certainly not as easy as outdoors... I start my poppies every year in peat pots...

Keep a fan on them to keep the stems strong. Often times those peat pots can get 'damping off' mold, that's the only thing i've ever grown with them.  I'd think 1/2 gallon cardboard milk cartons that would decompose may be a better bet, then you can just cut off the bottom.  Usually they need cooler temps to get started, good luck :tongue2:

the cooler temps are why I'm starting them inside. The a/c makes sure it never goes higher than 82 degrees, and at night I can open up the window since the ambient temp is usually in the mid 60's. I can also most definitely keep a fan directed at them. I have a small fan made to clip-on to a desk or such that would be perfect for that.

I've heard of placing the seeds in the fridge prior to planting to stimulate germination, but I'm not sure if that actually effects them or not. If need be I could occasionally move the seeded soil (peat pot and all) into the fridge overnight to trigger their response (if any) to cold.

In any case this is only a test batch. The most I have to lose are a small number of seeds and 6 of my peat pots.

does this mean my seeds arrived there already konnrade?

putting the seedcup in the fridge overnight after your first watering is a good idea, and does work.

same with hardwood cuttings, put them in a glass of water in your fridge overnight, and the next few days they will poke roots.

its an anrtificial winter.

Yes, they did indeed arrive.

Those tiny bags are neat, but with my fat fingers it's a bitch trying to open them

I planted 3 pots each of the giganthemum and the persian blues.

There were some strains in that envelope that sound pretty appealing. I can't help but wonder what black twilight looks like... calls to mind images of blacklight paintings on felt :stoned:

i think one of the main problems with repotting might be temperature.
i dont think they like to much of a sudden change.

i suspect anything you can do to make the transition more gradual
would be very helpfull.

well, my upstairs bathroom is usually closed off from the house and the a/c vent closed, so it's similar to external conditions, while being a bit more moderate. I can probably keep them in there for a bit before moving outside.

Then, when they do get outside, I'll acclimate them to the increase in sunlight by starting them off in partial shade.

Sound like a good idea?

According to my thermometer placed in the tupperware box with the poppies, it's 10 degrees celsius in the box inside of the fridge. Since that's a good temperature for poppies, I'm going to leave it there for an extended time.

I'm not sure how to acclimate any sprouts that may form after removing from the fridge though.
