OMFG, please tell me these are the edible type !!
    #6050070 - 09/11/06 01:05 PM (5 years, 8 months ago)

Agaricus species, but i'm a total noob and ive heard that some of these are poisonous..

I'm not certain but i think i might have two types. They look very similar only one type seems to have shaggier caps, both patches where only 20 meters apart from each other..
They looked slightly different tho so i kept them separate..

First patch pics:

Second patch pics:

I'm unsure exactly what i could put in a description that could help, i'm sure they're Agaricus..
Only thing that worried me slightly was that where the stems had snapped they bruised a slight tint of yellow in afew places, not all over though..

Do you think it's ok for me to eat ?, i'm so happy if they are.
I left 3 times as many as i picked..

I think these next ones are fairy ring champignons..

Habitat: Found growing in open grassland, organized in rings.. In some places only half or less of the ring was visible.

Gills: creamy beige colour, not attached to stem.

Stem: White, very tough. When snapped it looks like the outside white is like a sheath, i can separate it from it's insides, almost like the protective plastic covering on the outside of electrical wire..

Cap: Light to dark beige, dome shaped when young, flattening out with age but still keeping it's dome shape. Some have a slight bump on the top of the cap, this spot is usually slightly darker.

Spore print: White.

Bruising: non observed.

Location: England.

Thanks agian for any help,, i'm very grateful !

( mind my excitement,, todays the best days picking ive ever had,,.)

Second species looks to be fairy ring champignons (Marasmius oreades), they go well with ham, omelets and stuff..  The stipes (stems should be able to wrap around your finger without snapping in half.

The Agaricus should smell nice, either aniseed, mushroomy or like almonds. If they smell awful or immediately bruise bright yellow throw them out.

Ooops, missed that bit! Slight tint of yellow sounds ok. Horse Mushrooms (Agaricus arvensis) do that, they should have a slight smell of aniseed. If they smell foul and bruise immediately mustard yellow the are poisonous yellow stainer's (Agaricus xanthodermus), not lethal but they might make you vomit and get the runs!  :ooo:

They only have a slight tint of yellow, they smell nice and mushroomy..

These were from my usual field, i couldn't believe how many there was..
There was a little dip in the ground right next to where i found these where someone was camping, i don't know if he was a tramp or not but maybe he was there for the shrooms,,..

Thanks for your help again !!!!

It's suppost thunder tonight so maybe we'll get some more rain, i'll be back out again before the week has finished ...

They smell mushroomy eh? Agaricus campestris (the field mushroom) bruise pink above the gills if cut in two, could be those

We've had some thunder and lightning down here tonight.

thats a scaly agaric in your first pictures....they are very common..stain yellow and do cause the poops for some ppl. the next ones..the smaller ones with the slender white stem are not marasmius oreades or fairy ring marasmius. to me the are an lbm. they almost look collyboid...did they grow from a central point or singly?

Yeah, and your up on your British species living in Indiana  :smirk:

Those Marasmius are 99.9% fairy ring champignons, I've been munching them for years

Try the bending test I mentioned. The only other thing they could be is Clitocybe dealbata but by doing the test I mentioned will rule Clitocybe dealbata out.

They definitely aren't Clitocybe.

Yeah, I've been picking mushrooms for about the same time too and I've never had any problems consuming Marasmius oreades or Agaricus

no marasmius oreades are delicious. i dont think those would bear out keys....the stem for starters. and no i dont think they are dealbata either.

Some were coming up in twos and threes but i don't think they were connected at the base,, mostly singularly but arranged in circles.
The circles were probably about 6 foot across..

The stems pass the bend test if that helps anyone..

As for the Agaricus, if i smell the smaller ones they do have a hint of aniseed, but it's mixed in with a mushroomy smell.. The bigger ones smell less aniseedy.
Ive had a friend smell them and she said she could smell aniseed.

I do trust Amatoxin,, she's very local to me as she knows her stuff !

Collybia and Marasmius are two very similar looking genre. Almost all species of Marasmius have collyboid caps.

I understand your concerns greysRDbest, and I thank you for your input. However, I agree with Amatoxin; those look like Marasmius oreades to me.

i believe the larger mushrooms to be scaly agarics or agaricus praesquaralamosas. and they do cause the poops in some ppl. they are fairly ubiquitous on this side of "the pond". sorry to have ruffled feathers here. my second post and im already on the defensive. a polite thank you for your input would have done but instead amatoxin decided to get hostile. oh well hope they tasted good and caused you no gastric upset.

they do look somewhat similar to squamosas, the agaricus...

though the stem is wrong, and i would have to go with arvensis, since the scales arent pronounced like the prince.

squamosas look like a grey agaricus augustus, and cause horrible diarrhea
