IDing poisonous mushrooms

Do poisonous mushrooms have common characteristics? That is to say, do poisonous mushrooms share some aspect that might identify it as poisonous?
Can you tell if a mushroom is more poisonous that another?

Ummm, no. My dads friend once told me that poisnous mushrooms will turn onions black when boiled together. However I think this is horrible adive, and general rules should never be followed. I have read older mushroom guides and books that were published twenty years ago. The stuff in these books are incredibly wrong. For good update info, try and get the most up too date mushroom guide.

No.

No.
The only way is to ID what you find and then do some research on the species you have. Most species are reasonably documented on their toxicity.

Yes, they poison you. In some cases they even have the same toxins as each other.

Yes, when you eat them you get sick. You might even die.

Yes, you get more sick eating some than others.
Sorry, shymanta and koraks. I just couldn't resist.
Shymanta, the only reliable way to determine if a mushroom is poisonous (without eating it) is to accurately identify it. A good approach is to assume that all mushrooms are poisonous unless you can determine otherwise.
There are only about a hundred or so species of mushrooms that are actually worth eating (that number is debatable, but not by much more than a factor of two or so). The rest should be considered no more edible than any rock, tree branch, or pile of dung.
So, a good way to proceed is to determine a few species that have been found in the area you hunt in and learn to identify them. As you get better at identification you will learn more species.
Happy mushrooming!
