 PEAT Moss / Oyster shells/ Ver.

The last time I did casing I used a Martha with the 60/40 coco. ver. .... This time I want the replace the coco coir with Peat Moss And add crushed oyster shells if I was going to do this, how would I prepare the peat moss .... And what would the % be for all of it

pick out the sticks and stray shit, moisturize it thouroughly, go with a 50/50 ratio, add about a tablespoon of oystershells per cup of peat..

Can I use plaster of paris instead of gypsum? I think its really similar.

I find gypsum unnecessary in a casing mix although it does help prevent clumping in colonizing grains it does little for casing mixes also you are better off with chalk or finely ground limestone over crushed oyster shells as number one oyster shell is fairly insoluble in water making it although useful when using the oyster shell "flour" not as effective but also the fact that any particle size larger than "powder" much less effective (this is totally relevent to particle size). 50/50 is the ratio as mentioned above and it won't hurt to use a bit of short term buffer (hydrated lime) as well to combat peats immediate acidic nature, athough not totally necessary it's a good thing. Also although peat itself is pretty sterile down under the surface in the bogs the casing mix still needs to be sterilized or pasturized. GL

Commercial mushroom growers report up to a 40% increase in total bio-mass harvested when gypsum is added to the casing mix. Shiitake growers report up to a 30% increase in harvests when gypsum is added to the woodchip/sawdust substrate. Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both essential nutrients in mushroom metabolism. It's used in grains to prevent clumping, but it's used in substrate and casing mixes to supply valuable nutrients.
While cubensis is so easy to grow it can literally fruit off the pages of an old book, maximum yields and vigor will be achieved by following the lead of the highly competitive commercial mushroom industry, where something as simple as adding gypsum can mean the difference between profit and loss.

I am a firm believer in following the commercial industries standards as they are fueled by profits and as we know yields are profits. Although it may not be necessary for us home growers it certainly wouldn't hurt if you have it on hand.

Ok Im going to make my casing mix in two days...What the hell is gypsum??? And if I was going to mix it with my Peat Moss and Ver. mix how much Gypsum wouls I add.. To make sure my mix is sterail could I put my mix into jars and PC for a hours.. And where do you get gypsum????

1 tablespoon per cup of peat. Gypsum is basically sheet rock. Go get sheet rock, rip the paper off it, grind it up and there you go.

I really wouldn't worry about it bro it is not necessary IME I've had many killer flushes as well as seen hundreds more here that never had any gypsum, this isn't where your yields lie don't sweat it.

I use gypsum from the asian grocery where I get my agar. 49 cents for 2 Oz. IIRC.
The gypsum from Home Depot seemed to have an excess of magnesium.
I thought that the 'shroom wazz' was breaking down the oyster shell. Anyone know of any research studies on the metabolite liquid???
oh yeah- I was wondering if the gypsum would chjange the pH significantly???

Plaster of paris is used to make casts and molds. You don't want your project to set up like a cast on a broken leg.

couldn't imagine it working right.
was wondering if anyone had actually tried it.
I know someone out there has...
I'll stick to my good ol' powdered garden gypsum.
