Latin Pronunciation Tool?
    #5904831 - 07/27/06 09:12 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Is there an internet resource in which you can type in a Latin word and it pronounces it for you?

Aurora says its no big deal how you pronounce them as long as you try, but I am a little more superficial than that...

I think they are called "text-to-speech (TTS) systems in reference to their ability to convert text into speech" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_synthesis .. I know they have them for english. Only a matter of finding out if there is one for latin.

I found this.. it lists Latin somewhere in the site but I didnt try it or anything.

http://tcts.fpms.ac.be/synthesis/mbrola.html

I saw a couple others too, but it looked like some kind of software that one has to buy before being able to use.

Hey Jim, have you read M. Kuo's page? I like his point of view.
Here's the text for others that may be interested also:

Pronouncing Latin Names

by Michael Kuo

Oh, who cares?

Pronounce the Latin names of mushrooms any way that works for you, and if someone laughs at you, maybe you can think of some other names, in clear English, to pronounce for them.

Nothing is worse than an English speaking mycologist who corrects people's Latin pronunciation. I mean, it's not like the "correct" pronunciation is anywhere close to the way Latin should be pronounced. For crying out loud, the "correct" pronunciation of Amanita in English rhymes with (I) "am a fighta" ("not a lova").

Those of us who suffered through highschool Latin recall our teachers' explanations about "Church Latin" ("vaynee, veedee, veechee" for veni, vidi, vici) and "real" Latin ("waynee, weedee, weekee"). Now we've got Mispronounced Mycological Latin to throw in the mix?

Because English is the international language these days (or because Americans and Brits are less open-minded about such things and the rest of the world finds it easier to just cave in), mycologists from countries that don't speak English have adopted the mispronunciations used by English speaking mycologists--though I suspect they secretly wince inside with every term. When not in the presence of English speaking mycologists, however, many pronounce the names in ways that are more reasonable--like, "ah-mah-nee-tah"--especially the mycologists from countries whose languages descend from Latin.

yeah, David Aurora says the same thing in Mushrooms Demystified...

I just like to do things right... even if it is a dead language...

Tom Volk's fungus website is great, and there is a little sound file on each of the fungi of the month posts where he pronounces the mushroom.

I like those little audio clips that he provides.. sometimes I am amazed at how far off my pronunciation of some things are compared to his.

One time I went through his entire web site just to play all of the sound files to see how he says things.

It's worth nothing that the purpose of using these names is communication. So as long as the person you're speaking with is able to know what you're talking about, it's all good.

I'll also note that I hear differences between some of the professional mycologists I've heard on some of the names.

Happy mushrooming!

I once took a mycology seminar and the mycology professor pronounced psilocybe: sill-oss-ih-bee with most of the accent on the second syllable. So like Toxic says, even in the professional community you'll hear different pronounciations.

Falcon also pronounces it that way. He learned it from a mycologist.
I studied Latin for three semesters in seminary, and to be honest, hearing that bastardization of the language is like hearing finger nail on a chalk board.  :bomb:

Latin is a phonetic language that is very easy to pronounce if you learn a few simple rules. For example, the accent is always on the second to last syllable, and  "o" is always pronounced long as in "slow". The problem with pronunciation arises because science majors are not required to take even a single course in Latin, so they Americanize the pronunciation and errors are passed on when students become teachers.

But as ToxicMan noted, as long as we are able to communicate with each other, then the language is serving its purpose.  When falcon says sill-oss-ih-bee, I know what he is talking about, so it is a functional pronunciation. The fact that he knows more about mycology than me makes my complaint against his pronunciation seem trivial.

Never the less, I will continue to pronounce and teach the names of mushrooms using the correct pronunciation, to the best of my limited ability.

Interestingly, Tom Volk also teaches Latin for science students.
