Help with Psilocybe caerulipes
    #5873827 - 07/18/06 02:54 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I live in West Virginia and the only active mushrooms that grow here are Psilocybe caerulipes. Recently i have been experimenting with shroom hunting, but i just can seem to figure out what to look for in order to find psilocybe caerulipes mushrooms. I want to know any helpful tips there are for finding and identifying Psilocybe caerulipes. If you are well educated on this species any help you could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help!

A tip - use the search posts feature and search for that species.

It has been talked about tons in here this year. Your questions will easily be answered.

The caerulipes questions are becoming redundant.

Panaeolus subbalteatus and Gymnopilus spectabilis are also native to West Virginia.

Check out shroomydan's picture gallery. He has some amazing shots of the blue foot (my favorite) and you can get some great ideas of what habitat they grow in. Pan subbs are pretty easy to find, at least they have been in my expirience. But once you find some blue foot, they seem to be everywhere nearby. Check near birch and maple trees that have died and started to rot away, that is a place to start. Also in wood chip piles in man-made gardens or parks. Do reasearch!

Happy Hunting!

check river and creek systems and surrounding areas. If there is an elevation drop near a river (ie: floodplain) you are bound to find some. The Ohio River would be an ideal place for you to start. Where exactly in WV are u from????

This is an 8 year old thread. Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata is common in floodplains throughout the Ohio River Valley during the spring.
