Constant cobweb on Hpoo/straw
    #5774353 - 06/20/06 11:57 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

For the last few days, I've been getting cobweb on my (recently spawned) manure/straw mix (done in large Rubbermade tubs). I've sprayed with craploads of H2O2, yet the cobweb makes an appearance a short while (day or so) later.

Also, when I spray the peroxide, the entire surface of the manure/straw mix bubbles, if that's significant.

Any advice?

First of, how positive are you that it is cobweb? Your peroxide must be strong or straight from the bottle if it fizzes.
I once thought i had cobweb but it was actually mycelium. I recommend that you keep it and see how it goes.
Whoever it was who said, 99% of the time you think you have cobweb, you dont - quite true

It's normal for the cobweb to come right back if you don't get it all. Cobweb spreads by breaking off tiny strands of mycelium and sending them in the air currents. That's why it spreads/comes back so fast. You can see this under a microscope in a petri dish. The dactylium mycelium wags like a dog's tail, then shoots strands across the dish. It's really cool to watch. Be sure to spray down the entire surface of your casing layer even if the cobweb is only on a small part of it. Use the 3% peroxide from the drug or grocery store right from the bottle. It may take a few applications before you get it whipped.

Thanks for the advice- There is no casing layer, however. I just spawned my WBS into this stuff. I've got four big Rubbermade tubs, and so far I've sprayed about 2.5 quarts of 3% H2O2 onto the Hpoo/straw mix, in total. The mold seems to like the straw. It always seems to start growing on it.

I am also quite sure it's cobweb. It looks like cobweb, not at all like the mycelium, and it dissolves upon contact with the H2O2.

That would be cobweb then. If you just spawned and are already having this problem, then something is definitely wrong with your pasteurization process. You should have at least a week to ten days after pasteurization before molds can get a foothold.

Think it's possible to still save it? That's a lot of rather expensive stuff. (Not my pasteurization, ordered pre-pasteurized material)

Oh, I see. Next time it would probably be best to get it unpasteurized, so you can do that just before you spawn. Just keep using peroxide and hope for the best.
