Thanks Nighted thats a good site......baby may look for more staw, right now she has this big bale to use...still waiting for the spawn to finish it's run to start pasturizing. She is also going to try her new Myco-Bags. She has had some major set backs with her hay project.....Temps uncontrollable... Humidity out of wack .... Overlay.. matting.... contamination......will post the horrifying pics later to show all what has been happening...FUN FUN

Here are some pics of what not to do.

Here she had major overlay and matting....

Baby was really upset everything going well then uncontrollable temps and couldn't get humidity up enough in the rubbermaid tub. temps ranging from 60's to 90's...outside temps 50's-70's
She decided to scape off the casing and retry there was plenty of the substrate left to play with, she could have easily flipped it and recased that would have worked....

After she recased, it was placed back in incubator to recolonize the casing........no luck more matting baby got impatient and mad, in a fit she tore into the cake and casing mixing everything together then put it all in a plastic bag and reincubated.......this is what has happened.....

I do believe it is a lost case...but she has not given up.. she has pasturized another bag of Hay and has some B+ on Rye she is going to try...

She believes there is still hope for a decent crop from the Timothy Hay.

Here is a pic of her new incubator she just built...much easier to control temps., humidity.....it measures 2'H x 3'W x 2'Deep room for shelves and can be divided for a fruiting chamber.....

Will keep posting new project hope it turns out better...Live and Learn............

you should have just let it fruit but then again with uncontrolable temps and humidity that could be difficult .. i feel for you .. maybe you should have just deep scratched lightly recased and tried to initiate pinning .... how did your temps in the tub range from 60 to 90? those are huge differences ...

The biggest problem with hay is the temp thing. IME, hays, esp tim hay, are too thermogenic due to their high nitrogen content (which btw makes them more susceptable to contams). Especially at high spawn rates. The increased temperature often activates thermophillic bacteria, causing again more heat. Then you just have a mini compost pile, not a fruiting substrate. The high temps can also delay pin set because the natural temp drop of a straw substrate from decreased mycelial activity at full colonization doesn't occur.

This is just ME, and may not be what happened to you, you could have simply had a setup problem or something. I just say "Hay, why bother?" Straw is a given.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Yes, Baby had a major problem with set-up. She had to move her entire operation into her garage. It was very cold in there and baby overcompensated for the differences. This is where she got into problems before, she killed some cased TC's at 110 degs. F in her previous set-up. The TC's she spawned were very prolific and ate up the substrate quickly. She believes that with a proper set up, like she is working on now, there would have been major flushes.
Staw and Hay do produce alot of heat and she is leaving them at a lower temp. 80 deg. F. to help prevent overheating. She has both more Hay and also some straw colonizing now. She is working on building up to an outdoor bed. See last picture of incubator, straw and hay are in the bags labeled EQ and B+. We'll have to wait and see if she can get some nice "cakes" like before.

I've very rarely ever seen a need to put straw or hay in an incubator. It generates plenty of heat at room temps. Unless the garage is cold I guess. BTW, ME was that hay or supplemented straw had temp sky rockets at about the 5 day mark, which was at about 75-80% colonization. Keep your eye on them right as they are about to colonize, I've seen 15 degree jumps in half a day before.
Again, good luck.
