they're not mediocre. they're not anything, and haven't been since like...2001.
phil has a huge ego, but you can't say he's not a great frontman. every time I've seen him in pantera or SJR or whatever, he could have told the crowd anytyhing he wanted and they'd have done it instantly.
though he has been pretty wasted on stage sometimes, and often was a dick to the crowd, he still is a great frontman because he fucking owns the stage when he's on there and at least a little bit sober. he's no Iggy Pop, but he's still an awesome frontman, regardless of his ego.

I'd say he was a great frontman because of his ego. I mean, the music is pretty intense and it requires a strong lead presence to relate, so he had to be very "in-your-face", or very egotistical. And of course some of the best lead singers are just complete assholes (and I think Phil is one for sure, because in a magazine he once said that people who die from heroin overdose are pussies, cuz he survived). That's part of the appeal, the shooting star that burns so brightly in the sky, regardless of the consequences. We don't come to the show to see a well-behaved sober guy perfectly reciting lyrics, we want to see some RAWK!
