Exactly. It smells mushroomy, but very light usually.

maybe it just didn't colonize fast enough ... the guy at the bus stop said that it has been over a week and it's only 75% colonized .. probably not enough spawn ... maybe a grain got in with the straw .... he has 3kg of worm castings colonizing right now it's been only 4 days and it's almost done colonizing .. it was spawned with 2 quart jars of rye grain ... should he just fruit from there or should he try pasturizing wheat straw again?

How did the guy at the bus stop pasteurize it?
If the temperature gets out of control, one can get all sorts of smelly nasties growing
I?m not sure what the problem is with your straw, but unless it doesn?t become green from mold you could try and case it, perhapas it will fruit.

he said between 60 and 70 Celcius for 70 minutes ... it's slowed down on the colonization slightly .. it's about 6 inches thick .. i'll tell him to put an inch and a half of coco coir on top buffered with oyster shells ..... also he didn't mix grain with the straw he just layered it ... straw/grain/straw/grain/straw/grain
