 playing sports vs watching them

ok, so i really don't enjoy watching sports. esp on television, i find it boring as all hell. i don't see any reason to identify with any of the teams, so don't care of the outcome of the games. i'll admit that i've seen a few 'champions league greatest goals' type videos and can admire the level of play. but still, those bore me.
sports in person are a bit more exciting to me, mostly because you can get drunk in a stadium with a bunch of people and everybody cheers loudly. but again, i don't identify with either team ever, so don't really give a fuck what is going on. and the majority of sporting events i have been to it has been cold, so i always wanted to go home.
playing sports i much more enjoy, although i'm not serious about anything enough to play on a very competitive level. but to play a pick-up game of soccer, go snowboarding, hiking, or cross-country skiing, or just to shoot a basketball, play pig or go on a bike ride are all activities that i enjoy during the summertime.
does anybody else fall into the same category? for people that really 'identify' with a specific team, why is that? just because they are from the same place as you? why does that matter, most (professional) players are just drafted to play in a specific place anyhow - f.ex. the australian world cup team's members are all on opposing teams during most of their professional careers.

Only sports I'm really nuts about are Pride FC, UFC, k-1, boxing, and other less known MMA/kick-boxing/jiu-jistu leagues. I watch pretty much any sport, and enjoy it. Just not to the same extent I enjoy those listed above.
Picking a team might seem arbitrary but it makes watching a sport 100000 x more enjoyable when you have a loyal team to cheer for.
I also enjoy playing sports, but suck at most other than fighting. I'm decent at skateboarding, but suck ass at pretty much any other non-combative sports.

I like watching golf. No shit.
I like the scenery and the cold beers.
I also like to play golf for the scenery and cold beers.
Something about all that green and fresh air gives the goose bumps.

i agree with you krishna and also stein's train of thought. The more involvement, the more fun with the sport.
I think that real big sports fans incorporate their own memories of the sport(s)(the smell, the anxiety, the emotions, the visuals) with the dramatic competition between greats. Heck, the memories could even be of going to the event in one's youth(which could answer your team indentity question), but it is the drama that hooks. Soap operas, reality television, true-story specials, cop shows, and mafia productions generate drama as well. But this make-believe written stuff is nowhere near as intense a fevered sporting event can be. Its the ablitiy to create such anticipation, anxiety, satisfation, or disatisfaction without an upheavel of one's own life. Simple pleasures of adrenaline. That adrenaline is pumped in greater quantities if you feel like you have something to loose(like the honor of "your" team).
Although, watching baseball on t.v. is quite damn boring for myself(going to the games rock though), but this is insignificant because it is not my preferred drama.

I don't "identify" with a team. I will watch any base ball game. But I will only watch a Toronto Leafs game (unless they don't make it to the play offs like this year, I will root for Ottawa or Calgary)..
I used to play rugby and baseball. I miss rugby like crazy. But watching a game really isnt the same. It is a rough hard core sport, and is best to be right there in the action.
I have never been to a professional baseball game, but that is supposed to change this summer. But not because I identify with them, I just enjoy the game.
