Level Five Libertycap: A Shared and Unexplained Demonic Encounter
    #5464911 - 03/31/06 04:43 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Firstly a word to the wise: Copy and paste this in to your browser: http://www.badtripguide.com/

The above might be better titled the good trip guide; everybody wants a good trip right? During the following I was an utterly clueless kid, don't make the same mistake. Firstly, location, location, location! Avoid places like 711's or anywhere with unknown people and situations. There are enough unknowns to deal with, I don't recommend this type: "I went to some guy's party..." or "we met this weird guy outside Wal-Mart and..."; such situations are psychologically and physically dangerous; you will not be in Kansas Dorothy, and it's possible that random strangers won't be either.

If I were to trip again I'd do it in nature and alone and I'd take them as a sacrament with a clear intention in mind. Intention, environment can set you up for transcendental bliss, schizophrenia or anything in between. For those with ears to hear...
Anyway, enough of that, here's my trip:

My friend and I took 200 dried liberty cap mushrooms in tea ten years ago; the effects lasted about 8 hours and, at its peak, reached level 5.It has played an important part in my life since and set me on a course of study, Undergraduate and Masters Programs in Religion and Depth Psychology.

The trip started well enough, progressing from through the different levels as outlined in the classification on this site. From level 3 onwards there was synaesthesia, as if my senses had been rewired, I could hear colour, see sound and so on, the concepts of time and space became quite unintelligible in their usual sense, and I think it was McKenna who described a state where everything familiar but a quantum off. There was some serious morphing, melting, pulsating and animation of usually inanimate objects; a participation mystique with stimuli, and a blurring of subject objection relationship.

Then my friend and I had a shared vision of what I refer to, borrowing Zanoni's term, as the Dweller on the Threshold. At the time I called it Satan. As I looked in a reflective surface, I saw my eyebrows arch and my face become longer. Next, I saw this change occur in my friend. The face was extremely handsome, but utterly evil, the figure radiated an overwhelming numinosity and sneered at me, taking delight in the terror it knew it was inducing in me. Insanity was a distinct possibility; I was seized by an utter primal terror, and remember thinking that my hair would turn white and I would spend the remainder of my days in an asylum. What was most terrifying was the fear that I had become linked with this figure, and would remain in hell.

I remained mutely transfixed, in a state of utter uncomprehending horror, as this being and I stared at each other, and clutched each other's forearms. There was nowhere in the universe to run to, no thought or feeling or place; this being infused everything.

The thing was that when my friend and I came down from the trip we realized that we had simultaneously seen the same thing in each other! To the best of our knowledge we had not communicated verbally during the experience.

And it gets stranger. I met an aunt a year later for the first time. I have no reason to believe she ever had any experiences with mushrooms. She was a devout Catholic and involved with charismatic Christianity. We broached the subject of evil, but I did not tell her the details of my trip whereupon she reported a meeting with a man in a bar after one of her charismatic Christian meetings. This man kept bothering her and her friend kept trying to make conversation, six, seven times. They told him in no uncertain terms that his company was not required. My aunt's friend had to be somewhere and left. The man came and sat at her table and began crying while confessed some awful things he had done. My aunt kept praying during all this. She then described how the man's face changed and her description concurred with my one above virtually word for word. The being then said to her, "You know who I am, not a fucking word, I'm going back to my friends"

I'd be grateful for any feedback on this

I would love it if you could explain a lot more...... the man said that to her, do you mean to imply that he was the devil? Or is he saying "don't tell my friends about this, you know who I am now." as in, his friends don't know who he is? Or something like that.

Very interesting.... I think families might share archetypes, maybe, might see visions in similar ways to each other....... so it might make sense that you both saw the devil in the same kind of general way. Plus, archetypes are fairly similar to begin with across human experience, or they are supposed to be.

all just speculation, I really don't know much about it.

That sounds like an intense trip, there's probaly a lot of details that have slipped away after eight years. I'm not sure if you and your aunt really saw satan, or maybe it was some sort of fear or paranoia manifesting itself in your reality. It is strange though that you two had similar experiences like that. I suppose that i've seen the devil in people's faces. I don't think that it's happened in that specific manner.
When you trip real hard religious symbolism starts to pop out even if your not religious. During my most intense trip I saw myself being crucified on the stage of the PHISH show I was wathing, the IT. I haven't been the same since. For better or for worse??

If it had only been me who'd seen it I could explain it as projecting my inner demons or a chemical imbalance to which I could say with Scrooge when he sees the ghost of Marley "You're some undigested beef or else a piece of cheese". But it's the apparent corroboraration that complicates either of these explanations.

Yes, conservative Christians project their demons, but the experience was also real to her and it is the apparent similarity that puzzles me.

I don't know what the "not a word" injunction means exactly. My aunt interpreted it as a prohibition against telling the being's friends or anyone else in the bar. I'm not making any metaphysical claim about it, just reporting it phenomenologically.

Last time i was tripping i picked the shrooms myself, i was sure they were the right ones but while i was tripping i couldnt shake this idea that i was poisoned and slowly dying. At the peak i looked at the ceiling and the lines of the gibboard (drywall) intersected to form a cross; while i was staring at it tears streamed down my face yet i felt no sadness or fear or anything, it was pretty strange since im not religious at all.

freaky stuff. I remember reading that a guy who was doing DMT studies - i cant remember the name of the book now - got freaked out when a psychic approached him and told him that he was surrounded by demons and was meddling in demonic things...
I myself had a pretty nasty level 5r years ago on subaeruginosa where i had a similar encounter with what I could only describe as sheer terror and similarly i looked at my face and I looked like a demon, I was convinced that people at a party had 'tricked me out of my soul' and were gloating about it too each other and i could hear blood-curdling screams from everywhere but couldnt find the source.
I had to force myself to sleep as it was a pretty challenging experience.
Before that i had had pretty calm and serene heavy trips but this one just went kinda nasty.

:mushroom2: "Shamanism that is specifically rooted in the kind of experiences that are induced by psychoactive plants ... is an area that our society is extraordinarily phobic and nervous concerning, and the reason I think is not far to seek.
Because modern institutions depend on the transmission of a certain world view and then willing acquiescense in the truth of that world view by the populations into which it is being exported.
In other words a kind of cultural brainwashing is necessary for modern cultures to work at all.
The consequences of the acceptance of this situation of brainwashing is further acceleration toward catastrophe."
