Spore print viability
    #5397046 - 03/13/06 09:42 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

So lets say its been three years since a print has been used, also say there are 3 strains and an F1 print made about one year after. What are the chances they are still viable?

Also please post your longest known record for spore print viability...

Thanks

Spores are packaged by nature to last damn-near forever.

They will be fine!

typically would they take longer to germinate? Consider them being grown on agar...

I don't think it will matter unless they were subjected to extreme conditions. Direct sunlight or extreme heat. As Del said, spores are pretty badass. If you did a good job when you printed and packaged them, they'll be fine.

I recently tried to use several sporeprints on paper that were kept at room temperature in ziploc bags for three years. Not one germinated. Zilch. The two year old prints were still ok, but the germination rate was vastly reduced over when fresh.

3 strains are being worked with, one of which hadn't been opened, (it was surrounded in tape and that within a small zip-lock bag. They were packed by Hawk. Well its been 4 days and no germination...

I think prints will definitely last longer on glass or aluminum foil. Refrigeration might help, but I'd make sure it's a dedicated lab frige. There's too much mold and bacteria in the kitchen refrigerator.

hehe I was thinking A-foil impulse sealed with plastic.

I guess if it's a paper print or just thrown in a baggy that would change things.
