31 days after inoculation onto yellow birch sawdust oak chip. Second flush is better. Compare the pics, maybe you can see the differences of the quality of the mush. Same receipe of substrat but growned outdoors. This one is a second flush.

apparently the blistering is cutely known as 'popcorning'
i pasteurised my sawdust and inoculated with wild birdseed. the bag had a filter patch and was kept in an incubator for a couple of months til it went white, then brown on the outside. then i opened the bag and moved it to the clear plastic tub you can see in the pic, full of perlite and regularly wafted until it started popcorning: high humidity and plenty of air exchange. it was around this time i installed the indoor greenhouse with coolmist for airflow and ultrasonic for fog, both on timers, so i moved the blocks in there. from this point on, a week or two for fruits, and three small flushes each of maybe five mature mushrooms.
it was great fun, but next time i'm going the log route to see the differences. go for it

We could both inoculate her at the same time and see who has the fastest seamen.

Hi Shirley You could have at least 15 mature shiitake per flush. Instead of waiting that long for your blocks in the incubation room, You could have 4 flushes.
PS I think that you found the way to have a lot of boyfriends Wishing you: Good luck

wow!! cool pictures, and lots of helpfull info. shirley, you are one kick ass shroomer!!!
I feel better about my shiitake spawn now. i guess it's just going nutz. i inoculated about a week ago, and it's already at least 20% covered with thick mycelium.
