A FORMER squaddie who was caught red-handed with 800 Ecstasy tablets in his house has been jailed for two years.
In addition to the prison term, David Michael Kincaid (36), originally from north Belfast but living at Herron drive in Newtownards, agreed yesterday to spend a further two years on probation.
Downpatrick Crown Court heard that when drugs squad officers searched the-then Holywood home of Kincaid on January 21 last year, he assisted them to uncover nine separate bags filled with the pills, hidden inside a Tesco bag.
Prosecuting lawyer David Russell said the officers also found almost 200 grams of cannabis resin and a broken stun gun.
He told the court that at the scene and during police questioning Kincaid, claimed the cannabis was for his own personal use and told officers he was "under pressure" to hide the class A drugs which he claimed had been left at his home by two men the previous night.
Mr Russell added the police estimated the total street value of the uncovered drugs to be in the region of ?1,000.
Kincaid, later pleaded guilty to possessing the cannabis and Ecstasy with intent to supply and to possessing a prohibited weapon.
Defence QC Eugene Grant revealed that Kincaid had been forced to leave the Ballysillan area due to "tensions" between other members of his family and the UVF.
He further revealed that during 2004, the police had advised Kincaid that he should leave north Belfast and that "he was under death threat from the UVF".
The lawyer told the court that Kincaid, who has a history of mental health problems, had instructed him that a "Mr Warnock" had left the broken stun gun with him to see if he could fix it, possibly because of his Army background.
Handing down the jail and probation term, Judge Peter Gibson QC said it was clear that Kincaid had received "significant and serious threats" and that he had been living in what amounted to "little more than a fortified home".
However he added the dangers of Ecstasy were "well documented" and that anyone caught with such a large amount will face a "custodial sentence and one of some significance".
