"When you die, you wake up."

"When you die, you wake up. When you die, you wake up. When you die, you wake up. When you die, you wake up. When you die, you wake up."
I heard this last night, in a dream, over and over again. A woman was standing over me. She was young, perhaps not too much older then myself, wearing slim robes and a head of long, light-colored hair. She was standing over me, trying to tell me something, something URGENT, something SO IMPORTANT. Sometimes, she would smile, as though trying to encourage me. She was gesturing, and making these intense facial expressions, as if she wanted me so desperately to get it, her message.
"When you die, you wake up. When you die, you wake up."
It was very surreal, very odd, and I remember feeling fear as she soared over me, still chanting those wordss. I remember being 'unwilling' almost, to believe her. I wanted to believe so desperately, but I couldn't let myself, I couldn't accept the fact that everything I knew about death could be wrong. Even if it meant not waking up to realize it. Even if it meant living in falsity, living in this "dream-world" I had created for myself, forever.
Looking back now, it seems she was trying to get me to die. So I could wake up. Her urgency, her reassurance, her pleading voice issuing the secret to my salvation, all wrapped up in one tidy little phrase:
"When you die, you wake up."
And then, suddenly, I did wake up (or did I die?).
So here I am.
What a crazy ass dream.

that is crazy. ive often had the idea that death is like waking up from a dream. This is also described in the book of the samurai.

You wake up when you die, because this life is just one life on a journey of lifes. It will feel like waking up from a very long dream.

Death makes angels of us all And gives us wings Where we had shoulders Smooth as raven's claws
-------------------- self pity me so pitiful
you can see that birds and worms don't get along
self righteous me so wrong
you can see that we don't have to get along
self pity me so pitiful
you can see that birds and worms do not agree
and we will crawl

I often think that we will wake up from this reality as if from a dream, and then say "Wow that was so real". And then tell people about the crazy dream we had last night.
Ever dreamt you were someone else?

This also brings to mind a dream I had recently in which I died.
I was being executed by lethal injection (it was around the time of the whole Tookie thing) and I remember feeling not fear or any emotion like that but a very palpable feeling of adventure. Like I was about to go on a journey. My family were there and I talked with them, made my peace with them and said I would see them "on the other side". I was shown a tape reel of the history of the world in front of me. Visions of war, of hate, but also of love and nature. Then came the injection, and I began to feel myself slipping away. But rather than "lose" conscioussness, I began to slip into my waking conscioussness. In other words, as I was dying in my dream I was waking up into the world. It was a very gradual, interesting process and I laid in bed for some time with my eyes closed contemplating the experience.
Very interesting dream.

Id say that "when you die you wake up" more represents death of your ego.
Because it has been my experience that when your ego (the old you) dies, you really do wake up.

Ego death is a strange thing.
You really do feel like a new person.
Can anyone be with out an ego for a period of time? Or will a small peice always hang?

When one dies, moment-to-moment, to the clamoring of one's ego, then one is awakening. I think it a great mistake to think that physical death creates anything other than complete shock unless one's whole life has been about awakening. Buddhist psychology, Egyptian 'mytho-psychology,' Hermetic philosophy (which draws from East and West) all stress the importance of a lifetime of awakening. Most people are shocked and disoriented by dying and texts like the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Egyptian Book of the Dead exist to guide the deceased through the confusion and perils of the post-mortem state.

It could make sense. Just like you goto sleep at night, and then wake up in the morning. Its kind of like you went to sleep in a dream, where you dreamt in your sleep, and then you woke up from sleep and it felt like you were still dreaming.
All illusions.

I guess I have a hard time believing that death is anything short of miraculous and spectacular. I hope I'm not disappointed.

What is this belief based upon?
--------------------
“What is the ideal for mental health, then? A lived, compelling illusion that does not lie about life, death, and reality; one honest enough to follow its own commandments: I mean, not to kill, not to take the lives of others to justify itself.”
― Ernest Becker
"Beneath the civilized veneer, man remains the supreme predator. Cursed with what he believes is understanding, his true soul blossoms godlike in the heart of the nuclear inferno."
