Three things:

1. I mooch internet too, there's about 10 good connections by me so if one goes away, I'll still have plenty to choose from.

2. I see people sitting in their cars around the coffeeshop across the street. They just chill, with their laptop computers out (probably mooching too).

3. I saw the police come and tell 4-5 people in their cars, legally parked, that they had to leave. The cop just walked around and each person drove off after a little discussion.

I've also heard that it is considered illegal to use someone else's wireless connection without their permission.

I haven't paid for Internet for over two years. And yet I still manage to whore it up here...stealing wireless is KEY.

free internet is fun

no "NETGEAR" and so forth is the deafault wireless network name, if they WEP it then you will not be able to get in.
unless you know how to do some fun things

either way, dont be scared, they wont find out.
if anything they can run a "netview" find you, ping you, see where you located via a topper, and then thats that.

maybe even send you a net message saying "stop eating our internet" but all that is too much. they will just WEP it and lock it down.

Before they would trace your signal, and spend hours around the area of their router.. determining where the signal is stronger. These things would have to happen first:

1. They'd have to realize someone was piggybacking their connection.
2. They'd have to really care.
3. They'd hire someone to fix the problem, this would be the person who would track you down, if anyone did.

These things would be likely to happen.

1. They will never know or realize, and even if they did, they probably wouldnt care.
2. The person they hire is going to secure the network. The chances of the kid they hire even being able to track down the signal of the person leeching their net is nil... and even if they did know how... securing the network is just more practical, and easier.

Surf on, buddy.

Surf on.
