when traveling I could be on the road a lot, so I would pull over when I saw a hotel that had wireless...and park in the parking lot and give it a go...
It doesnt always work but enough to give it a try

Its illegal, and you can be charged with a felony. People use unprotected wireless networks all the time to hack, or commit crimes.
Also, they don't have to triangulate your position. While you checked your e-mail, and such you probably have something linking back to you. So all they gotta do is go back to some ip logs from way back if they are still there which they might and your nabbed.
If you do anyhting on someone elses network, make sure you are using SSL or some type of encryption. People can set up fake wireless hotspots for you to hop on and steal your passwords and such.
I also recommmend you getting an antenna. For long range stuff.... So you can maybe try and pick up signals across town and what not. Switch up your usage randomly to help you cover your tracks more.

And you really believe they're going to do that because somebody pulled over at a motel to check their email?

I never said they are going to do it. If the fish is big enough yes they will go after you. If its not than they won't bother. It depends if you checking that e-mail for jihad or not.. Or some big time dealer.... If the price is right they will come.

I can turn on my laptop, and bam, I'm on the internet. There is nothing that I can do to stop this problem from happening.
Maybe I live in one of these free wireless spots in the city, I dont know. Either way, it aint theft.

there is a small chance that you can be caught, but seriously, you wont. learn to hack encrypted WEP - that's actually pretty easy to do.

a friend of mine out in Virginia used to go war driving near Langly air force base and would catch connects from all the NASA geeks wireless nets... they may know rocket science, but apparently knew squat about network security. LOL!

Please exuse my ignorance, but is there a device or antennae which will increase my ability to pick up wireless networks that are farther away? This would be a good purchase for me as I could skip about on several wireless networks so I don't overstay my welcome on this one. This one I am using is the only one I can get a consistent signal on.
If these antennae or devices do exist, can anybody give me some links or suggestions for a decent quality one?
