 I am mooching wireless internet

I live in a really preppy neighborhood with all kinds of upscale places (Pottery Barn, J. Crew, Banana Republic, sushi restaurant, etc...). My apartment is literally twenty feet from the main road that has all of these stores. Needless to say, I did a search for wireless networks and about six popped up.
I have been mooching off of this one wireless network (NETGEAR it is called) for like a month and a half (I'm using it right now). I don't download movies and music and shit like that. I just check my e-mail and fuck around on the Shroomery (so I'm not using much bandwidth).
About a week ago I noticed that the NETGEAR network all of a sudden had a password on it and NETGEAR1 now also existed. Then a few hours later NETGEAR was back to being an unsecured wireless network. Do you think they were setting up something to try to spy on me and bust me for mooching?
Should I just bite the bullet and get my own internet or is it ok to mooch indefinately?

They would be able to triangulate my position if they wanted to I'm sure.

its not illegal for you to use their signal... it is their fault for not password protecting it.
their was a thread about this... I cant remember what it is called, but their is a website you can go to that will show you where in your town you can pick up wireless for free.

If they are too stupid to encrypt their network and not broadcast their SSID, then they're probably too stupid to realize someone else is using their bandwidth too.
Perhaps they don't use much bandwidth anyway, but they would probably just think it's shitty service or something.

I saw a news story somewhere about people being charged with "theft of services" for mooching wireless internet. I forget which state it was in.

This definately is not a "town" wireless network. This is a business or a personal network.

Yeah, I remember a few months back some guy caught someone doing this and called the law.
It was supposedly the first time they noticed this happening - The guy getting charged was a BIG deal at the time.....The internet security being so lack and all.
But in the end he DID get charged something for it - probably a small fine..

in florida they did that. and only because they guy was seen sitting out front with his laptop and they asked him what he was doing there and he told them he was there to mooch their signal. They got him with illegally accessing a computer network or something like that.
But that's the first such arrest nationwide it also said.

In my opinion it is ludacris to arrest someone because they used a signal which is actually being broadcast for unrestricted use.

Besides that, the guy had balls.

I remember hearing that story about the guy getting busted for mooching wireless while I was on my cross-country road trip at the time. I made it a habit to pull into hotels that had free wireless and sit in their parking lots and get online. After I read that story I got a lot more covert with my wireless mooching.

Yeah, well, a motel with wifi dont really give a fuck if you mooch onto it.
New Orleans put up a city wide free wifi. That's the city to be in right now. haha *cough* haha
