4 students rushed to hospital after cough medicine overdose

Four middle school students who overdosed on cough medicine were rushed to a hospital during school on Tuesday, a Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue spokesman said.
The girls, who attend Logger's Run Middle School west of Boca Raton, took Coricidin HBP Cough and Cold, Capt. Don DeLucia said. The medicine, nicknamed "Triple C," is a popular over-the-counter medicine that teenagers use to get high.
The girls - three eighth-graders and one seventh-grader - were taken to West Boca Medical Center after one girl became sick in class, school district spokesman Nat Harrington said.
Many teens seek highs with over-the-counter medicines that contain dextromethorphan (DXM), which Triple C contains in 30 milligram doses. Abusers often consume more than 360 milligrams, according to the Web site kidshealth.org. Although high doses produce feelings of euphoria, side effects include blurred vision, dizziness, vomiting, headache, seizures, brain damage and death.
Two Cape Coral teenagers died in February from Triple C overdoses. Triple C is considered more dangerous than straight DXM because it contains ingredients such as antihistamines that can produce a lethal overdose combination.

The worst part of it is that the drug will be blamed (DXM that is, not necessarily CCC alone), instead of the stupidity of the girls. Granted they are young, but damn.

they should just have pure dxm on the shelves, and not like it is now where its the pharmacists discretion whether they will order it for you or not.

The girls probably stole it anyways. Most kids that I knew in middle school always stole DXM containing meds. They didn't want to have to answer any Q's if asked.

Yup, I've puked from DXM before and I know lots of other people have too, it's not uncommon. She was probably going into the third plateau when she arrived at the hospital.

That was my guess too. Past the 2rd plateau can be intense for anyone who's not familiar with high doses, especially girls who are barely teenagers tripping in school (!). I could barely handle the 3rd plateau in the comfort of my own home. I don't know how people can handle that shit in school but i know it happens all the time.

I think the LD50 level is around the area of 3 or 4 bottles, not much chance that it was a life threatening situation.
