If you are referring to using tin foil during the pressure cooking phase, you only need it to keep condensation from entering your substrate. Beyond that, tin foil is not needed. Once your jars have been pressure cooked and inoculated, remove the tin foil. I always cover my jars with 2 coffee filters when I'm done inoculating. I also give the coffee filters a spray of alcohol before putting them on my jars with rubber bands.

ahhh so well, right now i have mycelium cakes, almost fully colonized in my jars; the only protection they have is a loosely screwed- on lid, should i take off the lid and add a sterile cofee filter?

No, you might dry out the substrate and stall growth completely. You should have 4 holes drilled for inoculation in the lid along with a dry top vermiculite layer, right? Those small holes and the verm are all you need. Leave the lid on, take the foil off.

I guess I should have clarified my statement. The foil comes off, but the lid stays on. The coffee filter suggestion goes over the lid.

ahhh hmm so if i left the lid on loosley, would adding a cofee filter matter, or should i do it anyway?(by the way i already have mycelium on the cakes)

Adding a coffee filter following inoculation simply adds another layer of protection. If you are using a BRF substrate, you may use some vermiculite. Coffee filters come in handy when you're doing WBS or rye, but can be used in any application.

i dont get all this foil/coffee filter crap. I put electrical tape over the holes for PCing. Then when you inoculate the holes from the syringe is adequate for awhile. Then eventually when you tip the jars onto their top to give em more gas exhange, THEN i loosen them up, but only a bit.

coffee filters are great for making coffee or keeping dust off the lids, they do nothing to reduce contamination

when i use to use the BRF tek I had my 4 holes (covered by tape) and the top part of my cakes (top 1/4 inch of the jar above the Brown Rice Flower and Vermiculite) covered with a vermiculite layer, as FooManShroom was talking about. The foil just went over the jars as i PCed them (mainly to add an extra layer of protection....to keep water from entering the jar and making the substrate TOO wet! Then the foil is no longer needed.
I only use tyvek filter (the kind from the post office or ups etc. ... FOR FREE!) now that I switched to Rye Berries to horse poo (much better than BRF Tek and just as easy). IMO and others too,Coffee filters don't really do the job as good...I don't recommend them.
I also screwed my lids on tight to keep the moister level just right .... only loosening it if it seemed to be too wet.

no so long you put that extra vermiculite layer on the top of your brown rice cake. In your case its just added protection. with the rye berry tek there is a 1/2 inch hole in the lid that needs a filter to keep out contams.......you should be cool!

check out the link, that is what i followed when i used to do the pf-tek
