Just a minor clarification. There are no brands that are or are not MAOI. ALL Black Currant juices brand are MAOIs, it's the concentration of the juice that determines the potency of it.

To tell you the truth first time i hear about Black currant's MAOI properties if indeed they exist...

Some question that either noone thought to ask or noone bothered so far to do so....

IF blackcurrant juice has MAOI properties then :

a) What type of MAOI does it contain? Irreversible? Reversible? Selective? Non-Selective? And which form of MAO enzyme does it inhibit

b) Has the specific compound reputed to exert such an action in this juice been indentified? IF so what is its name?

By the way here is a chemical analysis of the plant : http://sun.ars-grin.gov:8080/npgspub/xsql/duke/plantdisp.xsql?taxon=858

Looking up the activities of the plant two compounds show up that Dr Duke assigns them MAO-A inhibitor properties : Quercetin and Quercitrin.Also an extra one is listed as "MAO Inhibitor" (without further specification) : Kaempferol

So... i will run some searches on them to see what they are exactly.Feel free to do the same

Test 1--Demonstration of MAO-Inhibiting Action In Vitro

The test was carried out using a concentrate of black currant juice in 5.5-fold concentration. After adjustment of the pH to 7.2, one aliquot (40 .mu.l) was pre-incubated with the enzyme (1 mg mitochondrial protein, rat liver) for 20 minutes at room temperature. For determination of monoamine oxidase (MAO) type A and B activity, the reaction was started by adding 50 nmol @14 C benzylamine or @14 C serotonin. After one minute of incubation in a shaking water bath (37 DEG C.), the reaction was stopped (1 ml perchloric acid, 0.5M), the acidic and neutral deaminated products being determined after separation by ion-exchange chromatography.

The effect of the juice concentrate is described in percent of inhibition, related to a similarly-incubated buffer control.

Result

The black currant concentrate effects a 61% inhibition of MAO type B, and an 37% inhibition of MAO type A.

I found something interesting.

"the glycoside quercetin in GB has been shown to increase cerebral blood flow and augment cerebral function"

And even more, this seems to be present on GINKGO BILOBA too (Maidenhair tree, Kew tree).

Ginkgo biloba + mushrooms = :mushroom2:

Never heard of anybody trying that before.

Also present on ST. JOHN?S WORT, the popular Hypericum.

"SJW components appear to be free of the side effects associated with TCA or MAOI (MAO inhibitor)classes of drugs."

We might be onto a new way of tripping on mushrooms.

Back with some more info

On Qercetin :Apparently its a bioflavonoid ,which amongst others exhibits free radical scavenging activities (antioxidant).It exists even in apples (dont know what quantities) and in Ginko biloba. Its MAO activities have been documented also it was found to cause COMT inhibition.

Also what the "layman" should keep in mind: Its not only the presence of a substance that guarantees or denies a resutl.Its also the concentration that it is present. For example DMT could be found in lets say...tomatoes.But it could be found in lets say a microgram per kilo of tomatoes,so its not of use.So in the case talked here one should see what is the active dose for the compounds discussed here and the concentrations in the plants in question.
