- S&P Related Forums Further Restructured -
    #4846435 - 10/24/05 04:10 PM (2 years, 11 months ago)

This is a notice to all those that actively participate or have
been involved with the discussions related to the splitting of
the Spirituality and Philosophy forum over the past month.

After having reviewed the reaction and material being put forth in the respective split forums, it has been decided that we will re-integrate spirituality with philosophy to allow the stringent debate of various philosophical and spiritual topics so long as there is absolutely zero personal attacks or flames towards any specific user(s). This revitalized Spirituality & Philosophy forum will be moderated in similar fashion as the Politics, Activism, & Law forum has been for quite some time. Namely, discussion, debate, and question is encouraged; but there will be no tolerance for personal attacks, harassment, defamatory remarks, or flames.

Consequently, our newest forum that went by the name of Spirituality, Mysticism, & the Paranormal, will henceforth be known as Religion, Mysticism, & the Paranormal. This forum may embody similar topics as the Spirituality & Philosophy forum, however its intention is to allow a more tolerant style of discussion conducive to hypothetical matters that cannot be defined with cold hard fact. Thus, this forum will have a more extensive rule set prohibiting not only personal attacks and flames, but postings which appear to harbor a primary intent to attack or disprove the ideas under discussion. Obviously, this forum will be susceptible to considerably more subjective moderation, so if you have a history of getting under the skin of other users or staff members, or simply enjoy being confrontational, this forum is not for you.

We can think of these changes as allowing alternate avenues for both the literal skeptics (S&P) and the mystic dreamers (RM&P).

So it's basically just another name change to the forums and stricter guidelines in PMS?

Same moderators?

It is basically an attempt to organize and make clear what will and will not be tolerated, while simultaneously attempting to allow people of both stated mindsets to participate in a forum that celebrates their own style of interaction, much like how we branched Off-Topic Discussion to The Pub. The moderators of the forums may bounce around somewhat, as we discover which ones may be able to 'vibe' with the given context of either forum, and move, add, or remove them as necessary to preserve the above stated goals.

In all honesty, I believe that if you want two successful forums, you need to distinct groups of moderators. All of the problems are stemming from personal grudges and bias. Denying that is doing everyone that actually wants to discuss issues a disservice.

The current set of moderators should be left to the PMS or SM or RPM or whatever it is forum, and a new set should be picked out for the Philosophy forum.
There was a thread in one of those forums that talked about the peoples choice for moderators, and was completely ignored. If progress is what you all are really after, my best suggestion would be to go in there, look at what the people wanted, and get some new mods.

We have taken into account the names that were suggested for modship in the given forums, and these names have also been briefly discussed amongst the staff in the Moderator Forum. We are however, implementing a deliberate time-delay in adding any fresh blood to the system, such that we may first iron out the concrete form of each forum before adding in new minds to the mix. It is my belief that the immediate addition of new moderators would likely serve to lengthen the process of change since this topic has received a considerable amount of attention, thus a considerable amount of personal opinion; and throwing unseasoned staff members into the middle of the decision making process would be an inefficient course of action. Rest assured that as time progresses, we will be actively soliciting select nominees as well as holding further internal debate as to the implementation of new moderators for the forums in question.

Good stuff. Although I must respectfully disagree. Most of the people that were repeatedly offered up have plenty of experience in the given forums. Most are daily posters(unlike the current moderators). They are also representative of the each side of the divide, and mature enough not to carry on petty beefs.

I feel it would be especially beneficial to expedite the process in the S&P forum. Diploid, Swamil( ), fireworks_god, Skorpivo, and Paradigm would all make great moderators, and would certainly be able to function in an appropriate manner immediately.

But, I'm sure that is known to all, so I will not preach to the choir any further. Carry on.

I will help with being a mod. But, be warned, I am not in it to help the community at all. I merely want an avenue to exercise power over others and I plan on abusing it for personal satisfaction.

The way I see it, it's not so much that we need additional mods, but rather that RM&P needs to replace a couple bad apples.

"Let the fools have their tar tar sauce" - Mr. Burns

Keep the current crew in PMS, and give S&P a group of capable, motivated, active members to moderate.

I can almost guarantee with 100% certainty, that this would near-immediately squash all problems. No matter what the names of the forums are, or what the rules are, bad moderators ruin it for everyone.

With respect to S&P, it should not be difficult for any moderator to follow the new guidelines, as really the only thing off-limits is a personal attack or flame. Any and all criticism of ideas is perfectly acceptable in the newly rennovated S&P forum, and as the moderators have been present for this restructure, I believe that most if not all of them will be willing to adjust their enforcement in line with the less subjective rules accordingly. At any rate, as stated above if certain moderators fail to act within the new guidelines, we will of course remove or replace them as necessary.

I think the current S&P moderators are just fine. It's RM&P that needs new moderation.

If you seek new moderators because you wish the RM&P forum to undergo a reduction in moderation, you're barking up the wrong tree. The idea is to have hardass mod's in that forum willing to discipline users who are negatively affecting the experience of other users in the forum; in other words to protect people from having their ideas deliberately attacked, questioned, or mocked. It is a dreamer forum for uncriticized discussion, and if you can't handle that then you should not be posting in there.

On that note, I think the problem is consistancy... we all see how Swami gets treated in there, then wonder why nobody else (other than Paradigm) is treated the same way.

Both bans WERE uncalled for... and serve to keep people out for, what I feel, are the wrong reasons.

If you want to give folks a stronger impression for the nature of the two forums, I'd recommend changing the title of the S&P forum to Philosophy and Spirituality. This is more suggestive of the style, structure and content that is prevalent in the forum - especially, with the new rules. This would, by contrast, make the Religion, Mysticism and Paranormal forum's purpose brighter, so to speak.

On top of that, the appearance of having "Spirituality" and "Religion" so closely combined together on the list, as it is, gives off a feeling of redundancy, IMO. And I'm sure the fact that the differentiation between those two words are not always recognized by others, will only bolster to that effect.

Like Cervantes said, it's not a problem of being a "hardass." It's a problem of bias and inconsistency. There should be mods who won't abuse their powers to childishly act on petty grudges. I don't expect the mods to allow that forum to become another S&P, but I expect them to apply the rules equally to everyone. That is not currently the case.
