GPS to PC Garmin 2+ will not communicate with Com Port 1
    #4808279 - 10/15/05 06:54 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

OKAY... I admit it. agar is a complete computer idiot.

Not long ago, a foaf showed me a Garmin GPS, hooked to a laptop, with TOPO CD's in it, all set up in his 4X4. He had a 12V converter to 110v running the stuff - out of the 4X4 cigarette lighter socket plug in, Way cool.

The laptop display would show a bulls eye cursor on the topo map - in real time, showing where you are on the topo map & update about every 6 seconds.

So, I thought - I want one.

Using a Dell Latitude C600 laptop (40 gig HD, 512 Ram & CD), Win 2000,  National Geographic Topo (state series) CD's, Garmin 2+ GPS - with external antenna, Serial Port connect to GPS.

The settings & baud rate are set properly, on the GPS.
National Geographic TOPO state series software is compatible to the GPS & laptop operating system.

At first, using a serial port connection, I could not get the GPS to communicate with Com Port 1.

Then, it starts to - except frigging screen display on laptop says Com Port 1 is being used by another device (?) & the cursor dances all over the screen.

Is there some kind of serial port driver I'm supposed to install.

Any idea's? Or, should I pony up a few bucks, and take the pile of spendy little toys to a GEEK shop & tell them to make it work.

I would gladly give (postage pre-paid) a few free prints, a box of Myco~Nitro substrate, or whatever for some help - here.

When you write that the cursor is moving, do you mean the mouse pointer or the map cursor?

If the mouse pointer is moving, there could be a mouse associated with the com port. That is how mice used to work many years ago.

If the map cursor is moving, check the baud rate in the computer software as well. The most common setting for GPS is 4800 bps (8N1). Or see what happens if you just plug the GPS into com port 2 - that might be a simpler solution.

The mouse pointer is what darts around.

Baud rate is set properly.

Laptop has one serial port. Which is set as Com Port 1 (default). I can adjust the setting from Com port 1, 2 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8.

Since there is only 1 serial port, I cannot plug in a serial port plug in anywhere else.

Maybe, I should have acquired a USB to Garmin (4 pin round) plug. Anything I plug in there, the laptop recognizes.

Right click "My computer" on the desktop, select "Manage" and click on "Device manager" in the left list. There you should be able to see if there is a mouse associated with com port 1. If there is, that could be the cause. If not, I don't know what the problem could be.
