yes, i think making contact with extra-terrestrial beings is inevitable and is an important step in the spiritual evolution of an intelligent race.

If there is a spiritual or philosophical slant to the UFO thread, then it belongs. If it is just the same old proof debate, it belongs in the Pub or Science & Tech.

It all depends on the intent of the thread. If it's just trying to prove that UFO's are extraterrestrials, then it belongs in the Science & Technology forum. If it involves spiritual advancement, then it should be in the S&M forum. If it discusses the philosophical implications of extraterrestrial life, then it belongs in the philosophy forum.

I think it's ok in here as long as the poster knows that his views can and will be criticized and that people will ask questions. The poster should not take that personal.
Where do we draw the line between Philosophy and Spirituality and who is going to draw this line?
I'm for allowing almost anything in here as long as it's not specific pub or cultivation talk etc, you get my point.
Is string theory science, philosophy or spirituality? Different people will have different opinions about this. It will be hard for mods to be consistent in their actions.

Same.
S&P was the hub for that kind of discussion. The science forum doesn't get near the same kind of traffic, and forcing them to move unfairly destroys the discussion.
As long as people are open to all aspects of discussion and debate, I say let it be.

I agree with Paradigm. This is not the correct forum for arguing over whether UFOs are constructions of extraterrestrial visitors. Reports of UFO sightings belong elsewhere. Same with reports of crop circles, Bigfoot and Yeti sightings, livestock mutilations, images of the Virgin Mary found on tortillas, Elvis sightings, etc.

Almost there, I believe. I'll admit I have been leaving that entirely up to the veteran S&P moderators up till now. The idea is to moderate this forum in a fashion not unlike the way Politics, Activism & Law is moderated -- with as few rules as is practical and those few rules as simply worded as is possible while still being clear on what is permitted and what is not.
In essence, the rules will prohibit outright flaming and blatant disrespect towards fellow posters. It's acceptable to criticize an idea or a point of view or a segment of an argument presented in a thread. It's not acceptable to criticize the one presenting them.
Pretty simple concept really. What takes some time is generating a concise yet unambiguous phrasing of the concept. The objective is to head off at the pass those tempted to exploit some semantic loophole in the phrasing in order to subvert the clear intent of the rules and sneak in some shots at those with whom they disagree, then protest they have broken no rule when they are warned to step back in line. It makes more sense to spend some extra time up front to get the wording as tight as possible than to just wing it for now and then have to waste time and energy arguing with habitual line-steppers down the road.
I have every confidence those most likely to participate in this new forum will prove mature enough to avoid the temptation to indulge themselves in such lame maneuvers.

WAY to keep this thread on topic Phred.

Thanks for the update.

"Aliens stole my baby!" and "OMG I saw a Grey!" shouldn't be here. No way no how.
Nor should "Aliens have influenced humanity from its earliest days!", nor "Aliens have fueled all the technological advancements of the 20th century! You thought it was the Japanese.. but it's bibble!"
Those will just get tore apart. Waste of time.
If someone was to pose a question as to the philosophical / social ramifications of contact with an alien form of life or intelligence? That'd be not just much more interesting and rewarding than the typical UFO thread, I'd even say that it would be A-OK.. you wouldn't even have to take the stance that there even IS such a beast, which is key. The nature of such a thread would allow the assumption that such a thing was true, or would be true, simply to spark conversation -- and would not become bogged down in proving / disproving that aliens are or are not real. That's the kicker. That should go to the fuzzy-hug forum, since disproving somebody's deeply-held belief well, gee that's just not nice.
