How old do you have to be?

How old does someone have to be to have a respected opinion.
I only bring this up because probably 3 times this weekend (and COUNTLESS times with my own family) my opinions have been rendered "naive" and I supose childish because of my age. I never claim to know all, (as I have stated them to be opinions) but it seems a lot of times I try to say where I stand on a position becomes rendered as uninformed babble. I understand being 20 means I lack years to add to my life experience, but I dont feel my life experience thus far should be discredited.
Does anyone else ever find that they are seen as too young to have an opinion on anything?

Are you talking to engineers? Don't talk to them, they are in their own little realm of reality.
Otherwise, all I can say is that the older I've gotten, the less I've come to respect the youngins. Shit, they don't even play outside, anymore, or blow anything up. When you are missing an eye because that firecracker in the frog's ass misfired, come talk to me.

i consider myself to have an informed one, or i generally do not state my opinion. Although I will admit there are occasions where i have found my foot in my mouth without an articulate way to back up what I have said.
Ive noticed in life a lot of times people who shut down my opinion have pretty high opinions of themselves to begin with , or what I feel is a rather large ego.
But i know with my family anything i speak about that I have read and studied becomes a topic of jest. My mom will say dont believe everything you read (well duh), and that I try to sound like im 40 sometimes. But the second my sister rants on about a book she bought off an infommercial they jump to changing their lifestyle according to her 27 year old opinion. I supose it comes with being th eyoungest.
But sheesh, I feel like i have something to say sometimes and no one wants to hear it

age doesn't matter, it's what you say. Of course with some people, age does matter. Not me though.. I'll have sex with a 16 year old, or a 45 year old.

When it comes to someone voicing an oppinion, I don't take age into consideration when deciding weither to take thier oppinion seriously. If someone has a full understanding of the topic at hand, then I will listen to and respect their oppinoin...they can be 5 years old for all I care.
I have a feeling the majority of people would not respect someones oppinion untill they are an adult (18..19..w/e)...but it all depends..I know a few older folks who will only respect the oppinion of other people their age...so I guess it depends on the person who your voicing your oppinion to.

This has alot to do with culture.
for instance there's a saying in polish that goes somethin like, "Fish and children dont have a voice"
course it sounds better in polish. *im not polish in any way shape or form*

It depends radically on the subject, who you're talking to and what time your talking to them.

its not about how old you are, its about how confident you are entering the discussion. and also, dont take defeat or put downs to seriously, just do your research. think for yourself and do the world a favor! you seem to be doing that already so dont fret, as i said before, about people thinking your opinion is naive or what have you.
ALSO, one of the greatest philosiphies a man can have in life is this, imo:
censure yourself, never another.
so, be careful what you say, dont rush into discussions with all your flags waving and your whistles blowing. prod around see what they know, reofrm your information and knowledge on the spot and make a new opinion (even if its the same opinion, your knowledge of them will halp you in being respected.)

THanks for all your input in this discussion, I must say I was starting to feel a tad defeated over the consistancy of hearing I'm too young.
I'm sure there are times (especially with the fam) that I jump in with my flags waving as you have put it. But I just get so darn passionate about somethings and so frustrated when I'm simply told NO, and feel like im coming from the underdog position to begin with.
But thanks everyone, its always nice to hear feedback on things that im concerned about.

Your stab at engineers is misplaced. Engineers and scientists are taught to value facts above all else, with experience to fall back on. We don't give two shits about how old someone is or whether they're a friend or relative. A solid presentation of facts speaks for itself.

lol thats so fackin true.
I just turned 19 and although I try to be as informative as I can at that time, there are still certain ppl that will be just too close-minded and stubborn to begin with, so even if your right, their pride doesn't let them accept their faults, so that doesn't really help in the end. but its one of those fuckin sad realities we're just gonna have to adapt to, if we havent been doing it yet. hey man, if the world dont adapt to you, you gotta adapt to the mutherfuckin' world. or its just your ass in the end.

I think a lot of people may feel "threatened" by someone younger then them even having an opinion at all. Especially if its a good one....
I think its all about ego. I find that no matter how young or even naive someone is, they still always have something to say that you can learn something from.

There is no correlation between age and importance, generally speaking wisdom is gained not necessarily by age but experience.

It's always nice to be agreed with, but don't get used it, because the farther you stray from what is untrue the less likely it is that people will agree with you or understand you.
People like opinions that they can see reflected in other people, for most, there is no point in having an opinion unless someone agrees with it. Whoever is like that, is corrupted and their opinions are corrupt.
So don't get upset, enjoy the fact that you're not another mindless parrot.

People are, to some extent, able to sense when someone is speaking from wisdom or not.
Usually, respect for a person's opinion relates to how wise they've shown themselves to be.
At various points in my life, I've either been respected or completely disregarded. Which one occurred directly related to how wise my words were.

I respect my elders, but I find offhand dismissal on basis of age when I'm speaking truth absolutely infuriating.
