yellow mushroom patch 8 feet up in a silver maple
    #4740854 - 10/01/05 11:36 AM (6 years, 7 months ago)

A dead patch of a big live silver maple right outside my house in VT held a patch of these yellow mushrooms. What are they? I havn't printed yet since they don't look ready. They're up about 8-9 feet high in the tree. Notice that there is also one mushroom peaking out about a foot above the main patch. We're on the edge of a heavily wooded area in northern Vermont.

Here are the pictures:

Go ahead and pick one and make a spore print. Also, let us know what they smell like.

I'll bet the spore print comes out a medium brown. In that case you have a Pholiota of some sort. Not a genus recommended for eating, and none of them are active. Several of them are mildly poisonous, causing gastrointestinal distress.

Happy mushrooming!
