What was the very first Grateful Dead song you heard? Is it still your favorite Dead song?

I have no idea what it was - Ripple pulled up to the train station and I got in his car and it was blasting and he was fucking EXCITED and I never asked what it was.

Perhaps the song he was blaring was his namesake?

I don't think so for some reason...he said it wasn't a great song at all actually, that I'd hear the good stuff on the ride up.

Then the stereo broke. :frown:

Oh that's right. You hadn't heard The Dead before the gathering. Perhaps Ripple knows which song it was. My first Dead song was........

Touch Of Grey

On the ride up me Rip and Cervantes listened to some live shows that Ripple had...I remember really digging Eyes of the World and Franklin's Tower.

The only time I've heard Fire on the Mountain is when moe. does it. I like their version.

Mine too, but I really didn't care for it that much. Then when I was 13 I went out and bought a greatest hits compilation cassette on a whim and I didn't like that either, so I set it aside. Then a couple years later (which coincidentally was when I started getting stoned), I picked it up again and started listening and it was great. I like the dead a lot, but I'm not all fanatical about them like some people that populate this forum!

i mean im sure it was like truckin or casey jones, but that was just backround radio action before i cared, or knew hoo the dead were.  2nd time i ate L i ended up at a buddy of mines house and his older sister was a head, and her friends were over.  they were playing mars hotel and they blazed us up.  it was the 2nd time i tripped, and 1st time i smoked while tripping.  talk about wow.  after one hit i was no longer here.  as much as a L made me trip, smoking budd while on a psychedelic, well i aint gota tell most of you guys but it was insane.  i remeber leaning back and listening to unbroken chain and the part where there are like a sting of bells, if u know the dead u know what i mean, well while that part was on i had my first closed eye visuals.  a string of leaves, not sure what kind but just leaves were flying past my field of vision behind my eyelids.  i remember coming to and my friends mini doberman pincher dogs were licking my face and everyone was getin a kick out of my tranced out state!  later that summer i went on vacation with my parents to rhode island and stopped into a music shop and picked up a used version of skeletons from the closet and aoxomoxoa!  and that was all she wrote.  well not realy but u know.

Interesting stories, guys. It's also interesting that the two people who said Sugar Magnolia was the first Dead song they heard, still consider the song to be their favorite.
