Matsutake Picking Season Begins September 12, 2005 - koin.com
BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Hundreds of mushroom pickers have descended on Oregon this week, for the opening of the commercial Matsutake mushroom picking season.
The season started Monday in Oregon's Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua and Willamette National Forests.
The Matsutake is considered a great delicacy in Japan and it commands quite a price.
At times during the 1990s supplies dropped and buyers were paying hundreds of dollars a pound.
Since then, the laws of supply and demand have prompted pickers to harvest Matsutake in China, Turkey and elsewhere.
Prices are back down to between $5 and $15 a pound.
Local Forest Service districts don't issue personal use Matsutake permits until October and there's a limit of fifteen mushrooms per person.
To prove they're not commercial harvesters, personal pickers also have to cut their mushrooms in half.
