So last week we had a massive storm roll through that caused a bridge to collapse taking with it all the phone lines for certain areaes. One of the areas affected was my gf's work. So her boss asked the employees to use their cell phones to make calls and they would foot the bill. They all use the phone regularly throughout the day to deal with clients. I thought this was a little absurd but you can put your number on private and the company was going to pay for it. Fine.
So yesterday they collect a list of all the cell numbers which, as she will find out today may be used to give out to clients. She told me this last night and I said it wwas completely fucking out of line and they have absolutely no right to do this. She has dirty old man clients that are always asking her out and hitting on her. The last thing she needs is them to have her private cell phone number. She thinks if she doesn't comply they may fire her. I told her to tell them there is no fucking way she is giving out her cell number to clients and if they don't like it they can do what they're going to do.
It's not like she wants to be doing this job for a living. The company is family run but it's a huge business and makes more than enough money to find a better solution to this problem. If I were in her situation I would tell my boss to fuck himself. Period. She shouldn't be responsible for the phone lines being down, and it seems outrageous that they could fire her for not complying. I'd like to go in there and tell her bosses exactly what I think about this and them. What would you do?

Fucking right, man! I'd try to make a big scene, too, when I confront my boss about the obvious privacy issues involved. Make sure the other employees see me standing up, hopefully they get a little backbone in the process 
Tell her to ask her boss if he will pay to have her phone # switched to a new one after the phone system is back up.

I'd refrain from making a scene. You would just have a mess on the hands. She should point out her valid objection civily. The objection should represent itself well. Good luck

Just want to back up the cowgold approach. Have your girl tell the boss what the deal is(dirty old men and whatnot), and if they can't handle it too bad.
Don't quit though. If it comes down to that, wait til they fire her. Then it will be easier to get unemployment if need be, and it will be more understandable when asked "What happened with your last job?" in an interview.
And if she does lose her job, contact the BBB and maybe even look into a lawsuit for wrongful dismissal.
On another note, I think we got some of that rain. Nothing got fucked up though.
Was on the freeway doing like 10MPH. Couldn't see shit...it was literally blankets of rain.
