A mother is now charged with capital murder after her baby died and investigators found meth in the little girl's bottle.
Investigators say Gilda Casarez, 31, was driving along Highway 16 in Poteet, when she saw a police officer. They think she got worried, because she had meth in the car. Detectives say she hid the meth in the child's formula and the next time she fed the baby a bottle, it was laced with meth.
"She was in the car, and when she saw a police officer, she hid a bag of ice in the formula can," he said. "When she later removed the bag, she noticed that a majority of it had come out, but she never bothered to throw it away."
"She woke up that morning, and the baby was dead," said Israel Casarez, Gilda's father.
Gilda told her dad she didn't know how the baby died.
"I thought maybe she had just suffocated on a pillow while she was asleep," said Israel Casarez.
But that's what the autopsy showed.
"The evidence speaks for itself," said Chief Deputy David Soward, with the Atascosa County Sheriff's Department. "The child had enough meth in her to overdose an adult. When you're talking about a 3-month-old, that can obviously cause death."
Casarez is now behind bars, on a $250,000 bond.
