alice's adventures in wonderland

I finally bought a used copy of alice's adventures in wonderland for a couple of bucks the other day because I had never read it or seen the movie and plus the hippies made such a big deal of it in the sixties. And then there is the famous picture of the caterpillar smoking the hookah on the mushroom.
This is by John Tenniel, the chap that did the original illustrations for the book. I figure he is drawing a real mushroom, or drawing the mushrooms after looking at them for a while in the forest. The cap on the big one is not perfectly round, and seems to have striations toward the margin, and on the small one, the bell-shaped cap seems to have an in-curved margin (is it a dung-lover?) things you wouldn't do to a mushroom unless you looked at them for a while. What genus would you put the small ones? The large one? Same genus? Sorry the scan is not larger--that might give you more habitat info.
And by the way, people say that the hookah showed his interest in opium. I once saw an opium pipe used in the 19th century in China (a friend bought one at an antique market there) and it didn't look like a hookah.

Hey Wallace,
Ther eis a whole 30 page pictorial of Lewis Carroll and the Girl Alice on which the books are based either in the Ethnobotanical forum or the pub forum posted by MJ.
You should check it out. It is good reading.
