Poisonous mushroom kills dozens in China

Poisonous mushrooms have killed nearly 50 people and left more than 100 seriously ill in China in the current wild mushroom picking season.
A health official in the Yunnan province in southwestern China said the toll was higher than the seasonal average. Mushroom picking is a popular summer pastime in the region, Sky News reported.
"People die every year in Yunnan from eating poisonous mushrooms, since wild mushrooms grow all over the place here," he said.
Separately, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said consumer confidence over all kinds of food security remains below 50 percent despite improvements in recent years
Huang Hai, assistant minister of commerce, told a news conference in the capital Beijing that 8 percent of domestic food did not meet national qualification standards for food security, and that 7 percent of vegetable products exceeded the standards for pesticide residue.
He said despite improvements, the government's supervision remained weak in rural areas.

At least 10 Russians have died, and over 50 others have been hospitalized or received treatment in the past three weeks after eating poisonous mushrooms, agencies reported Monday citing a regional health official.
The poisonings have been registered largely near Voronezh, about 475 kilometres south of Moscow, said Irina Zaitseva, deputy director of the regional sanitary and epidemiological department.
Zaitseva said that since the end of June one child has died, and 58 people, including seven more children, have been treated or hospitalized, AP reports.
She attributed many of this year's deaths to an outbreak in the growth of one particularly poisonous mushroom that was largely indistinguishable from edible ones.
Unfortunately, dozens of people die annually from poisonous mushrooms in Russia and Ukraine, where gathering mushrooms for pickling or soups is a favorite pastime and, for some, a badly needed supplement to meagre diets.

what was it? Maybe death caps were confused as volvariellas? The straw mushrooms you find in chinese food are volvariellas. They have a volva similar to poisonous amanitas.

I think a picture was with the second story (the russians) and it looked like an amantia..its in the news forum if you want to see the pic.
