does anyone know what the song riders on the storm is about??? i cant find any info about the song.. all i can find are lyrics

Jim had a weird facination with death and I think this song is about being born....to die. 'Riders on the storm' is like the shadows and other challenges that follow you, help you, stop you through life.

This was the last song Jim Morrison recorded. He went to France and died a few weeks later. The single was released in June, 1971, shortly before Morrison's death.
If you listen closely, you can hear Jim Morrison whispering the lyrics over his own singing. This causes a kind of creepy effect. (thanks, Mark - West Bountiful, UT)
The Doors brought in bass players Marc Benno and Jerry Scheff to play on the album. Scheff came up with the distinctive bass line after Manzarek played him what he had in mind on his keyboard. It took a while to figure out, since it was much harder to play on a bass than a keyboard.
This evolved out of a jam session when the band was messing around with "Ghost Riders In The Sky," a cowboy song by Stan Jones.
Ray Manzarek used the electric piano to create the effect of rain.
This was the last song on the last Doors album with Morrison. It ends with the storm fading slowly to silence. The remaining Doors released 2 more albums without Morrison.
Morrison got some of the lyrics from a screenplay he wrote called The Hitchhiker (An American Pastoral). Morrison was going to play the part of a hitchhiker who goes on a murder spree.
Paul Rothchild, who produced The Doors' first 5 albums, decided not to work on this because he didn't like the songs. He thought this sounded like "cocktail music." The Doors ended up producing it themselves with the help of their engineer, Bruce Botnick.
The single was shortened for radio play. Some of the piano solo was cut out.
In year 2000, the surviving members of the Doors taped a VH1 Storytellers episode with guest vocalists filling in for Morrison. Scott Stapp from Creed sang on this.
Creed contributed a version of this to the 2000 Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate. Creed also performed it with Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger at Woodstock '99. Krieger sat in on Creed's "What's This Life For?" during the set.
Doors drummer John Densmore wrote a book called Riders On The Storm about his life with Jim Morrison and The Doors. (thanks, Ted - Poway, CA)

theres an old lady in the subway giving humbugs for change... shes a rider on the storm...somewhere in africa theres a man beatin crazy on a drum! hes a rider on the storm and he aint never even heard the doors...

Okay, Quick quiz: Who's on bass? No bass. That's right. The Doors had no bass. You see, the gypsies ad no homes. Don't let that scare you, let that free you. Let that liberate you. 'Cause when you're free-flying with the Doors, man, you don't need no safety net. If you scream, "Viva la Doors!" loud enough for your landlord to start thumpin' on the walls, then you might in fact be a Doors fan.
There's one way to know for absolute sure. Get an eight-track tape of LA Woman -there's only a few in existence- and steal a car. Even if you own one, steal a car. Get in that car, play the tape, full blast, and drive West. When the tape ends, get out, and go to the nearest bar, and start to play pool, or pinbball, or possibly even foosball, and wait to get into a fight. Afterwards, get back into that car, and drive till it runs out of gas. Then, torch it. And if, as you're standing there, watching those flames, if you can still hear the Doors sound, you will have become a Doors fan. You wanna know how I know? You wanna know who told me? Well, last year, Jim fuckin' Morrisson told me, that's who. He came to me, 'cause I'm a Doors fan. I'm a Doors fan, man... man, I love their sound. I like the Doors.

Maybe Riders on the Storm was nothing but a product of metaphores that Jim himself couldn't figure out when he sobered up.
You should ask him the next time he's hanging out in your sub-concious.
