Hey, I was checking out some cow patties that i took into the woods near my house (minor signs of mycelia) and I found this, any ideas? a. Habitat- pine cone...inside a pile of needles, leaves, and georgia forest debree. in augusta, GA b. Characteristics of the gills - caramel colored, attatched (or damn close) c. Measurements of cap and stem - cap 7/8 in. .8 - 2.0 in d. Characteristics of the stem- white base, fading to reddish ascending to cap, hollow, fibrillous, semi fragile, stem is fairly sturdy for its size. e. Characteristics of the cap-reddish brown, darkening toward the nipple. slopes downward at no more of an angle than a sphere cut in half. f. Spore print color (very important!) g. Color that the mushroom bruises - i cant tell h. Scent of mushroom:Not the smell of a fresh yummy mushroom, a smell however, but different than other mushrooms i've found. lacking the "fresh" smell
A high percentage of the species of mushrooms that rot pine cones are from the genus Strobilurus. If not from that genus then likely genera include Mycena, Baeospora, and Marasmius.
