My 1st casing's pinset. 1st & 2nd flushes (Photo Journal)

My 1st attempt as a true casing finally pinned yesterday! 8 days after placing in terrium. The pins are still pretty small today, but I can tell they are growing! Here's some photos, and I'll take more as the days go by and they get bigger. Low bandwidth users beware, the full images are about 200K each. I also need to throw out a big THANK YOU! to everyone who's been helping me! Now I just gotta cross my fingers and hope not all of them abhort.
UPDATE: For those wondering, here's my recipe for this casing: Subtrate is BRF made the PF tek way. Cakes took 28 days to fully colonise. They were given an extra week after that to setup, then dunked overnight in tap water and refridgerated for ~24 hours. Subtrate was cased as outlined below and then put into a PMP with 3 air pumps attached: 2 under damp perlite and one above.
Casing layers are as follows:- ~1/2" moist verm on bottom
- ~2" of crumbled subtrate in middle
- ~1/2" 50/50 mix on top with some oyster shell mixed in.
Temps have been from 70F-80F, humidity ranging from 96%-98% I'll add updated pics to the original post. Day numbering is from the time of placing casing into terrium.
Day 4 (pre-pin):
 Day 7 (close-up of pre-pin surface):
Day 9 (1 day after pins first show):
 Day 10:
 Day 11:
 Day 12:
Day 13(1st flush picked. Casing cleaned & patched):
175 Grams wet, dried to 18.4 grams Day 14:
 Day 15:
 Day 16:
 Day 17:
 Day 18:
 Day 19:
  Day 20:
Day 21(2nd flush picked. Casing cleaned, patched, & Dunked overnight):
66.5 Grams wet, dried to 7 Grams

I have it in a PMP with 3 air-pumps attached. 2 under-gravel and one pumping right into the open air in the chamber. Should I still fan manualy?

Errrr, maybe? I fan allot as well, even though I have good airflow going. If you can fan and keep the humidity where its suppossed to be at, do it. The fresh air introduction should help out your pinset. Do you have any holes in your PmP?

kratomboy can you tell me a little more about your casing? What casing mix did you use? Are you using a bulk substrate? What kind of grain did you use? Just curious, looks nice.

No, I just have the lid ajar a little where the hoses from the pumps enter. Maybe a 1/4" gap on onwe side, tapering down to zero at the other end. I'm thinking of building some sort of adjustable air-hole. Something I can slide back and forth to get more control over humidity (and better air flow)

Thanks! Here's what it's made of:
BRF Subtrate colonised following the PF tek. ~1/2 inch moist verm, covered by ~2 inches of crumbled subtrate, covered by ~1/2" 50/50 mix with a little bit of oyster shell added (but no lime).

If I can remember to take pics everyday, I might end up making them into a little time lapse video.

Beautiful! Same place my first casing is. Amazing how much they change every day. Wish I had a digicam!

We knew what was destroyed in all the inspection processes and that was a lot. And then we bombed with the British for four days in 1998. We might have gotten it all; we might have gotten half of it; we might have gotten none of it. But we didn't know. So I thought it was prudent for the president [BUSH] to go to the U.N. and for the U.N. to say you got to let these inspectors in, and this time if you don't cooperate the penalty could be regime change, not just continued sanctions."

Agreed. This is also my first time with a PMP. I think the air exchange is making a LOT of difference in how fast they are growing.

Question on green mold... [Re: kratomboy]
#4179664 - 05/15/05 09:18 PM (8 years, 1 month ago) |

So my casing is looking pretty good (from my point of view), but I just discovered a small patch of green mold on an older cake that was in the same terrium. I took it out and disposed of it but now I'm all worried about the green mold attacking my casing! How likely is this? The cake it was on was sitting right next to my casing. Should I mist everything down with my h2o2/h2o solution? I really REALLY don't want to lose this casing. Any suggestions?

Maybe wipe the tub down. And if you see green forming on the casing, try throwing some salt on it.

you could use boiled tapw or distilled/h20 10% or more for all casing misting and cakes

1st flush BLOOMED today. I decided to pick before all the spores drop. I think a few might have already. I think the funny looking pattern on some of the caps are spores (see original post for pics), does anyone else recognise it? It wipes off like spores anyway. I'm used to seeing the caps covered, and I think this is just a light dusting. I'll get a final weight posted tomorrow, but looks like it's going to be close to 180 grams wet.
I didn't see any signs of the green mold. I hope it doesn't grab my casing while it's recovering from harvest. I used h2o2/h2o solution to re-wet casing layer.

nice job!! your caps are open so spores have already been dropping, if you don't want spores all over your place, pick when the cap just starts to open while the cap is still round shaped , or when the veil was just torn

Wet weight of 1st flush was 175 grams. They dried for a couple days with a fan on them (see pic in 1st post), and now they're in with some desiccant. I will post the dry weight as soon as they get cracker dry.
