 pf tek - leave tape on or no?

my grandmas friend is cooking up some jars tommorrow.
she was wondering if she should remove the tape while incubating or not.
pluses...minuses...?

your grandma's friend needs to remove the tape if she wants any growth... the mycelium needs oxygen! so you'd better leave your tape off while your jars are colonizing or else they wont.<br><br>? ? ? -????? O ?????-? ? ? ?

I would suggest leaving the tape on until the mycelium has colonized at least 80% of the jar, that way when you do take the tape off it will provide impetus to speed up the remainder of the colonizing.

Shit ... MY grandmas freind left the tape on her jars. It has since been 2.5 weeks - maybe thats been hindering their growth this whole time. I'll have to tell her to get that shit off the lids and let them finish... Maybe the reason they have colonized partway is because the lids are loose...

If you leave the tape on they will stall because of c02 buildup, take the tape off and cover with an alcohol swab to act as a filter...:-)

that's an excellent method, however the mycelium WILL colonize just fine for the first 80% of the process with the tape on. Why risk ANY contams?

sure - wait and till you notice stalling before doing anything..., then pop off the tape and quickly on the alcohol swab...:-)

No worries!! Although its wet, just tape them on good...an example:i use 5 innoculation holes one in each edge of the lid, and one in the middle...I then place five alcohol swabs on each hole, and then wrap tape around the lid and jar twice in four different directions between the five swabs... never had a air born contam since...

i found that taking the tape off between 50 and 80 percent colonization works for me and i also like to turn the jars upside down at that point.

thats been without it and my last batch had zero contamination maybe im just lucky but i like the keep it simple theory ;0)
