But you really have to take both perspectives, not just the females. Why do many black men have a preference for white women?
Here is an article found through Google:
Interracial dating has been on the increase since the Civil Rights Movement of the '50s and '60s. But today, in 1994, the opposition to such relationships may be as strong as ever in both Black and White communities.
But it must be emphasized that the vast majority of Black men, including entertainers, athletes and high-powered professionals, do not date and marry White women. In fact, the most accomplished Black men are married to beautiful Black women, including Bill Cosby, Denzel Washington, Michael Jordan, Spike Lee, David Justice, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Gen. Colin Powell, Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. It is also significant that most Black executives at Black and White corporations are married to Black women.
Yet, in the minds of Black women, "this thing with Black men and White women has reached epidemic proportions," says social psychologist Dr. Julia Hare, "because we have so many beautiful Black women of all sizes, shapes and colors, and there are not enough eligible and suitable Black men to go around. There is a man shortage, and it is especially acute for the college-educated, professional Black woman."
Dr. Halford Fairchild, an associate professor of psychology and Black studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., agrees with Dr. Hare's assessment. He says the Black man/White woman relationship is a recurring theme and a source of friction among many Black female college students. "Black men are underrepresented on campuses and in the professions," Dr. Fairchild says. "The rarity makes them a hot commodity, and they are sought after by both Black women and non-Black women.
"Many Black women find themselves without sexual partners, for the pool is small for Black women," continues Dr. Fairchild. "Many are sexually frustrated or have chronic problems in their lives. When they see a Black man with a White woman, it symbolizes all of the problems they are experiencing and creates resentment."
Talk to almost any Black woman anywhere in the U.S., and the resentment is obvious. But so is the shortage of Black men. Thousands are locked up in prisons and jails, while thousands more have chosen lives filled with crime and drugs. Some experts say there are between 35 to 45 single Black men who are in college or have jobs for every 100 Black women. The more education and income a Black woman has, the fewer eligible Black men on her level.
That's why it is especially disturbing to many that there appears to be a greater number of well-educated, employed Black men who have chosen to date and marry White women. Through the news media we are inundated with entertainers and athletes who have crossed the color line for love. In addition to O.J. Simpson and Barry Bonds, there are Michael Jackson, Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Gregory Hines, Al Jarreau, Frank Thomas and Montel Williams--and a host of others. Williams emotionally blasted critics and defended his wife, a former topless dancer, saying, "I really don't care what people think about our races; I don't care what people think about her profession."
Moreover, a significant number of Black professionals, such a doctors, lawyers and bankers, are married to White women. Of particular note is Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, whose wife was quite visible at his side during his confirmation hearings that featured sexual harassment testimony by Black law professor Anita Hill.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, interracial marriages have tripled since 1970, and Black-White unions have quadrupled in the last 25 years. Of the approximately 1.3 million interracial couples, roughly 260,000 (only about 2 percent of total marriages) are Black-White and about 171,000 of those are between Black men and White women. The statistics, however, do not reflect the increasing number of interracial couples who are dating or living together.
This year marks the 27th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared unconstitutional laws barring racial internarriage in Virginia and 15 other states. The 1967 ruling came about after a mixed couple in Central Point, Va., Richard and Mildred Loving (she is Black), challenged Virginia's 1924 antimiscegenation statute in response to their being forced by local law officials to live apart, go to jail or leave the state.
Since then, the number of interracial couples has steadily increased. Yet, in this country, with a history tarnished with racism going back to slavery, marriages between Blacks and Whites continue to represent crossing once taboo sexual and social lines. And though Black women/White men couples have increased significantly in recent years, they don't seem to provoke the passionate responses that erupt when a Black man/White woman couple is sighted, or even when the subject is mentioned.
While a number of Black women emphasize that they are not against interracial dating in general, they say they are "annoyed," "enraged" and "disgusted" by Black men who express a preference for White women. Several pointed out that it has been reported that O.J. Simpson was partial to blonds.
"If a White woman happens to be the person you fall in love with, I don't have a problem with that," says 23-year-old Yolanda Butler, a first-year law student at Loyola School of Law in Chicago. "But more often, it's that the Black man will not date Black women. He is saying that the Black woman is not good enough. When Black men start making blanket comments like 'I don't like Black women because they're this or that,' then it's an internal problem. Yes, I have a problem with Black men with that attitude."
And so do a lot of other Black women as well as Black men.
"Very often, Black men exclude Black women in favor of White women due to racial brainwashing or 'brain-dirtying' that has taken place in this country, placing White women on a pedestal," says Dr. Halford Fairchild. "There are those who want to make it in the White world, and very often 'making it' means having a personal relationship, making it in bed," he says, adding that it is true of both women and men, but it is not as hurtful when Black women date White men. "Black women are not as much a rarity as Black men," he says.
When asked why they prefer Caucasian women, Black men give varied reasons. Some state what they consider "advantages," such as the San Francisco city official who said, "White women can open doors." Others say it is the interracial climate in which they work and live, that they more often come into contact with White women and, consequently, that is who they date and marry. Still others say it is love, pure and simple, while some say dating White women is exotic, that it adds spice to their sex lives. At the same time, there are those Black men who say White women are "more feminine," more pleasant and less likely to challenge them as, they claim, Black women do. Others say that Black women are too "sexually uptight," that they are not into the oral sex tradition as White women are.
Another excuse Black men give for mating with White women is that they are getting back at White men for slavery and discrimination, though critics counter that such men are in fact feeding the negative stereotype of the Black man who lusts after White women.
Dr. Fred Clark, a psychotherapist in Sacramento, says Black men and White women who date across racial lines may be rebels expressing anger. "The angry Black male knows that he will be punished by Blacks and Whites through stares and indirect comments because of his interracial relationship," says Dr. Clark. "He has a distinct dilemma, however, because he enjoys knowing that he represents the sexual myth of the superstud rumored by White males, but he is unable to feel whole in his relationship because he is not totally accepted by Blacks or Whites."
Research and personal accounts indicate that interracial couples experience considerable hostility in the workplace, in their social lives and even within their extended families. And Black-White marriages are more likely to face prejudice than other interracial pairings. Though many believe that we live in a liberal society, those who go up against the rigid yet unspoken cultural norm are greeted with poignant opposition.
And while many Blacks and Whites consider themselves free of prejudice, they feel and express discomfort, if not outright opposition, to Black/White relationships. "I feel it is irresponsible for Black men to cross date in today's day and time," says Dr. Fairchild. "It is nice to date whom you want, to say that all is equal, but life is not equal. Black people are defined as inferior and put in second-class status. We must recognize our debt to each other. For Black men to date and marry White women in the face of our lingering debt to each other is irresponsible. The brother has sold out. We have a responsibility to each other. We are under siege. We are at war. To sleep with the enemy is treason, racial treason."
On the other hand, Mark Mathabane, a South African writer whose wife is White, has written in defense of interracial mating. "...Mixed couples often find themselves caught in the racial cross fire," he wrote in Newsday newspaper on Long Island, N.Y. "They are resented partly because they are proof that prejudice can be overcome, that Americans, despite racial and cultural differences, can find common ground.
"The Black man/White woman relationship provokes the greatest hostility," he continues. "Among Blacks the opposition is sometimes manifested in charges that a Black man married to a White woman is ineffective in advancing the Black agenda, suggesting that White women somehow have an evil or corrupting influence on Black men and should be avoided as spouses. Black women married to White men are accused of having prostituted themselves to their slavemasters. Yet Black causes haven't lacked effective champions who were, and in some cases still are, interracially married.
"Interracial couples have an important role to play in the improvement of race relations," Mathabane continues. "They know firsthand the importance of Blacks and Whites knowing each other as individuals rather than through stereotypes and half-truths. Often, they have overcome personal prejudices in establishing genuine friendships founded on mutual trust, respect, cooperation, open-mindedness and communication. These ingredients are prerequisites for racial harmony."
Dr. Fred Clark says intermingling of the cultures is a natural sociological and anthropological progression. "If we really want equality, we must intermarry," he says. "That is how a subculture takes on the core culture. When we stop being as prejudiced, then these changes might be made more easily."
The world in which we live is far from perfect and just as far from presenting equal opportunities. As racial diversity gains in the workplace, it will also continue to pervade our social and personal lives. Interracial marriages will continue to increase, but, perhaps, so will the opposition.

One of my white flat mates sleeps exclusively with black dudes (she just nails them... no dating or anything). I asked her why and she just said she "likes black guys more". Fair enough.

I am sure many of the cases are because of becoming attracted to someone, and being able to see beyond race.
I am also sure some of it has to do with the exoticness of having sex with someone who is not your race. Plus, many black men are physically larger (not necissarily in the pants lol, but the whole body), and perceived as more animalistic. It's also a taboo subject, a sort of "forbidden fruit" to some. This is also the area that includes "doing it to piss of their fathers", which is true in some cases as well.
I just happened to be reading about early colonial law last night, and was reading about this subject...
In 1662, a law was passed in Virginia (and later in some other states) that said that the status (slave/free) of a child would be that of it's mother. This, in combination with the laws stating that interacial marriage was illegal, and that no black man could have relations with a white woman, set up a system where it basically legalised the rape of black women.
The plantation owners would rape their black women slaves, impregnating. This was overlooked by the law as I'm sure you can imagine at that time. The man was never forced to marry the slave, as it was illegal to marry interracially. When the child was born, it took the legal status of the mother (slave), and the plantation owner now had another slave for free...plus he gets to get his rocks off as well.
On a more positive note, Rhode Island passed the first anti-slavery law in 1652, but it was not strictly enforced at first.
As far as black father's staying around, one major issue is the systematic poverty the African American culture is in in many areas of the nation. Stress from not being able to support their family leads to relationship problems, and this is the primary cause in many cases (not even considering yet health insurance, benefits, etc.). It is important to note that you will find that it is not a "black" problem, but a poverty problem. It is only due to the fact that many whites are better off financially than many African Americans that we see more black deadbeat fathers.
I think with the black culture, this problem started early on (decades ago) when poverty was almost the only way in which many blacks live. More are out of poverty these days, but it is still an endemic problem. However, even for those out of poverty now, living in the middle class, it is hard as their fathers and father's fathers were deadbeats. It is a cycle that is hard to break, not unlike physical abuse.
