Mandrake is oftentimes associated with something of a trance-like drug which in high doses can cause delusions, etc. I believe the part in question is the root (which is typically the most potent part of the plant), but I may be mistaken.

Ah my mistake.. I forgot about mandrake..
What about goldenseal must be taken with TLC? I've never heard any negative effects from it.

Goldenseal has a warning that I've read for two reasons:
Pregnant women should avoid it as it is reported to cause complications. Also Michael Tierra says to leave it alone if hypertension (high blood pressure) is in place.
Chinese herbology says leave it alone for individuals with "internal cold, deficient conditions." See "The Way of Herbs," a fav of mine.

Avoid long term use with goldenseal to keep from destroying intestinal flora. paraphrased from "The Male Herbal".
