Liquid--Light Malt Extract powder

I believe it was Tahoe that mentioned that Karo liquid cultures tend to have a "recovery" time when injected into jars; the myc that grows off of straight sugars is not as robust as the myc grown off of malt extract? Is this correct? I called my local home brewing place today and they've got the powdered light malt extract in stock. Opinions on the superiority of LME over karo/honey? And what ratio do you use for LME/water volume. Thanks!

hum I have no experience using the liquid culture yet. I was just going to dump the whole culture into a huge bag of birdseed myself.

Best LC nutriants, I have ever found is 50/50 dry dextrose/light dry malt, half & half, placed into just a bit under 4% solution (never over 4%).
Quick to start, healthy thick myc & stays active a very long time (stores - stalls in fridge - well - also). Dry dextrose is just corn sugar & is also available at home brew supply store.
Prep by mixing, then PC'ing 20 minutes @ 15 psi, then cool a bit, decant & strain through double coffee filters, reload, then PC again. Results will be crystal clear.

Never noticed any recovery time requirements, for LC.
Stick to 4% solutions, like agar said. eg.
For Honey Liquid culture - 1tsp.(10g aaprox) Honey to 1 Cup(250ml) water For Karo Liquid culture - 1tsp.(10g aaprox) Karo to 1 Cup(250ml) water For Malt Liquid culture - 1tb.(10g) Dry Malt or Dextrose to 1 Cup(250ml) water For Agar Solid Culture - 1 tb.(10g) Dry Malt + 1tb.(10g) Dry Agar Powder to 2 Cups(500ml)
Inoculate with 1cc rehydrated spores. You should see mycellial growth with 3-4 days.
I'm kinda partial to the Dry malt or Dextrose, or mixture of the two, myself

while those listings are general rules of thumb it should be noted that accurate measurements can be made by knowing the sugar content of the specific material you are using. There's not a very wide variation across brands/products but enough to merit reading the labels.

Hi! I'm certainly not disputing anything. I'm just confused. Your recipe seems to match up with Stamet's book: 40grams Malt Extract to 1000ml of water. I'm confused as to why other recipes call for 1 gram to 600ml. This seems very disparate. Is the malt extract different or something?

the theory that i have heard bantered about is that, because it will grow on grain, having it eat sugars from grains will make it used to that.
and i tend to use lme and grainwater, but i have also used honey and that seemed to be just fine.
corn is a grain, so cornsyrup ... is kinda grain sugars. i dont know that any difference that you will get will be noticable, but i dont tend to use cornsyrup.
i think i have in the past but its been a long time.

You're necroing a thread that's nearly twenty years old by the way.
-------------------- How to post pictures to shroomery TEK Shroomery Trusted Cultivator And Member YouTube Channels. “Evey Hammond: Who are you? V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask. Evey Hammond: Well I can see that. V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is”
