Anonymous proxy list for Firefox SwitchProxy extension
    #3966596 - 03/24/05 08:55 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I wrote a script which parses the Xroxy anonymous proxy list and returns them in a format you can import into the SwitchProxy Firefox extension. If you want to use it, the URL is http://www.shroomery.org/ythan/proxylist.php

Hope someone finds this useful!

Peace,

-Y

Awesome Ythan!
Ive been messing with Proxyrama and Charon to do the same thing but it's always nice to get a list of good ones.
Thanks.

Just a quick note, I updated the script so it also grabs the high anonymity proxies from http://www.publicproxyservers.com.

Just out of curiosity, why are you only grabbing the "High Anonymity" instead of the "anonymous" proxies?

Also, I wanted to add that when using proxies it's still a good idea to filter all connections with something like ProtoWall. I used ProtoWall yesterday, while surfing through the proxy list, and it cut off several proxie connections as being possibly dangerous. One was "the state of Georgia board of Regents".

I suggest disabling auto-update on SwitchProxy as it has been said to slow FireFox down considerably.

Options > Preferences > uncheck "Notify me of updates"

Spondee

Um...my firefox, 1.0.2 doesn't have a "preferences" link within "options". It's under "advanced" in the "options" area.

Mobius_Strip: My first instructions were for changing preferences for SwitchProxy using the SwitchProxy tool bar--sorry that wasn't made clear. To change preferences using the FireFox top menu bar, try Tools > SwitchProxy > Preferences, and again uncheck "Notify me of updates."

No, you were clear enough. I was tired and not/reading comprehending well enough. Thanks for explaining it though.

I too would like to know what makes these 'high anonymity'...I've never trusted proxies of any sort because someone on the proxy end can view everything you do.

The /proxylist.php link keeps going to a blank page over the last few weeks. Before that it was working great.

Are you dropping it, or going to continue this wonderful resource?

If you have to drop it, thanks for trying in the first place, Ythan.

Let's pretend I know very little about extensions and Firefox and proxies.

Wait...no, let's ASSUME, in fact, KNOW WITH CONVICTION, that I am a fucking clueless whore.

Is there a tutorial anywhere that will help me follow Ythan's instructions in his original post?

I have downloaded the proxy extension for firefox. And I have Proxyway installed.

But I'm a giant dumbass as to what to do next.

Help me, shroomery cpu nerds! You're my only hope!

Well if that's too complicated for you... you can try something that's much simpler - http://www.proxyswitcher.com/ Not free tho, but very nice.

I'm confused, how do I use it? I have installed SwitchProxy, do I just plug the URL into the URL field of the SwitchProxy anonymous proxy settings, or what? I tried that and it said that the URL did not contain valid addresses.

Edit: I didn't realize this was an aged post.

I think the URLs listed in the script need to be updated as they point to the wrong pages now, can someone update it. BTW if your using it now you aren't protected and you probably don't realise it. I could be speaking complete bullshit however.

Yeah, I think the proxy pages have changed their layout since the script was written so it will no longer function. The author could fix this pretty quick I think. I just don't know enough about what is going on. I suppose I will just have to do it the hard way :smirk:

I down loaded this script and chucked it on a another web server and found that this line was causing the script to fail:

eaccelerator_cache_page($_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], 21600);

Once I took this out it started working even though one of the URLs was wrong.

Even though this thread is sticky I get the feeling that no one really cares about it.

Anyway thats my 2cents.

For all of you wanting to find anon and high anon proxies...try Charon. Charon is a freeware program designed to search for proxies. This script is pretty simple compared to what Charon does. IMHO, keeping it simple is often best and I can appreciate simple and easy but Charon does it better. There are other freeware proxy finders out there too.
