All right I know that there have probably been more than a thousand threads just like this...if that's the case deleting it would not offend me... I really want to expand my musical horizons. I really like electronica (postal service etc.) and I like good punk rock like Nofx, and I like CCR, and I LOVE Radiohead. I seriously like most music, I just want to find some really cool band that I would have never heard about. I know that ya'll are the kind of people I would like to get some ideas.... I'll go ahead and put some bands down that some of you may have never heard so I can add to the productivity of the thread: Mickey 3d (french-kind of like brighteyes in a way) Har Mar Superstar (weird) Deltron (crazy rap) Cat Power (really chill girl singer song writer) Mars Volta (lead singer from at the drive in...with flea from the peppers and John F. from the peppers) OK go (poppy) Wesley Willis (funny as hell)

yeah Deltron 3030 was an album, and it was the first one I heard so I always call him deltron...he changes album to album. but he only refers to himself as deltron in that album

yeah, its definately del tha funky homospaien. he's ice cube's cousin. also part of the west coast crew known as heiroglyphics. had a pretty big hit in the hiphop community back in the early 90's called "mista dobbalina".
the beats on the deltron album are by a guy called dan the automator. he also did the beats on the dr. octagon album (kool keith). not only that, but he's part of the gorrilaz (remember that hit they had on the radio? well, it's del tha funky homosapien rappin on that, too), handsome boy modeling school (with ex-de la soul producer prince paul), and loveage (another side project featuring mike patton from faith no more).
all of the automator projects are typically of high quality and definately worth a listen. if you like deltron 3030, you will love dr. octagon, a darker but very similar style of the deltron album.
if you just like del as an mc, you should check out hieroglyphics' album "3rd eye vision" or his solo album "no need for alarm".
just joined the forum, i am a walking talking hiphop encyclopedia
[edit : deltron is a concept album and is the only album in which del refers to himself in a different pseudonym other than "del tha funky homosapien". automator most often does these concept albums, so when he works exclusively with one single artist, its most likely the featured artist will use a pseudonym based on the concept of the album. like i said before, del has only used a pseudonym once, thats it.)

Definately true. I think it's kinda sad how people just think of mars volta as just Cedric and Omar...cant forget Jon,Ikey and Juan.
BTW, flea and gang are on L'via L'viaquez.

Yes, definitely get Frances the Mute, its amazing. L'via L'viaquez is one of the best songs of the year. Probably the best album I've heard this year. But probably will be knocked off by the new Shpongle or the new Tool album, though, but thats fine.

Cannot agree more. The Books are such a genius mixture of real instruments and sampling; life-affirming, aurally gorgeous, humorous.

Also have to second other recommendations of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis (though I'd recommend "Kind of Blue" as a starting point), Sonny Rollins is pretty killer too. Don't know if you're really into jazz, but I recommend you try it out as you seem to like experimental sorts of music.
Lots of other good mentions in this thread.

Listen to this man. All Del and heiro shit is great (in fact i'm gonna toke an play 3rd eye right now since its been so long since last time I played it!), and I'll second Automater too. To keep with the bay area rap theme I'll reccomend some blackalicious and dj shadow and any quantumm product especially lyrics born. Some new sage francis and mos def. Hieruspecs is some good stoner rap also.

Hey man, check out Sound Tribe Sector Nine. They're a 5 piece band that plays drum and bass, trance, downtempo, ambient music all live. Every member also has a laptop on stage and believe me they get nasty. The website is www.sts9.com You can download hundreds of their shows for free at www.archive.org/audio Some bands on the archive I also recommend are Brothers Past, The Disco Biscuits, Lotus, and there are thousands of Grateful Dead shows. Have fun, Peace.

oh yeah, have any of you guys ever heard of a group called "breakestra"? theyre a band out in cali i think, signed to the hiphop label stones throw, and it's crazy, all thier songs sound like they were recorded back in 1971. its a funk band and you could easily mistake them for old original funk groups from back then. pure talent, a must check :-) they'll play for like an hour straight nonstop on thier cd's. must peep! fuckin jammin!

Mars Volta (lead singer from at the drive in...with flea from the peppers and John F. from the peppers)
Mars Volta actually features their own guitarist, same guitarist from At the Drive-In, Omar Rodriguez Lopez. Check out his new solo album if you're into experimental guitar.
It's funny though, John Frusciante and Omar have some similarity in their styles. I don't think Omar is quite as diverse or original as John though. John Frusciante is love
In fact I'd have to recommend a couple of his solo albums. I have all his stuff, but it's definitely not for everybody's tastes. His first solo record "Niandra La Des & Usually Just A T-shirt" is very original and melodic. For his more recent work, I'd recommend the albums "DC Ep" and his last one "Curtains". It's very different than his work with RHCP, and some people absolutely fucking hate his solo stuff, but many people love it as well. If you do check it out then please tell me what you think.
The new Thievery Corporation album "The Cosmic Game" is really good. I think most people will enjoy this record (a mix of dub/electronic/downtempo).
Peace
