 casings peat vs. verm.?

I'm currently using peat for caseing with a 25% ratio of verm. I've had good results with it. I understand the principle of a casing layer and realize its job it to provide moisture and texture. This being the case why not just use vermiculite. It holds 5 grams of water per gram of verm compared to peat at 2.5 grams of water to single gram of peat? Is it the cost of verm.? or is it a combination of things? Please explain. Thanks.

I find that using only verm makes for a very loose caselayer. When your're going to pick the mushrooms you get large holes in the layer which is bad imho.

that is true, peat will get inbetween where the verm doesn't, and also it is hard to determine the moisture level with just verm. There isn't a color change unlike with peat or coir.

Straight verm will work but you will get better results if you use a buffer. Hydrated lime and calcium carbonate are popular choices, but there are a few different things u can use.

Oh and some people don't like using straight verm cuz its kinda hard to tell how moist it is just by looking at it

He wasn't asking about a buffer. He was asking why peat is even necessary for helping with moisture, since vermiculite does fine moisturewise. This is a good question, and it seems it's been answered.
