the palms of my hands are really really dried out and my fingertips are extremely dry and they are callusing (sp?) and peeling over with dead skin. my skin on my left thumb cracked in two places and started bleeding.
WTF? i mean i know my skin gets dry in the winter, but it has to have something with touching paper all day at work, maybe?
i use moisturizure and try to stay hydrated, but its not helping much.
anybody have any suggestions? i can only use so much aloe here.

maybe you can try putting vaseline on your hands, and then putting socks or something on your hands while you sleep, that may help throughout the day, or can you do your work with gloves on? I guess it depends on your job tho...

Touching paper all day is very bad for your hands! Paper sucks the moisture right out of your hands! Aloe is a water-based moisturizer, you need to step it up a notch. There are some super-moisturizers like lac-hyrdin 5 that are used after surgery (I used it). Go with a heavier cream or oil-based moisurizer. Cocoa butter is good too. Find a super-moisturizer and slater up in the morning, at lunch and right after work. Also, find yourself some cotton gloves or socks, and slater up really really well and put the sock/glove on before bed. There are also medicated healer hand lotions out there. Take good care of your hands!

Like the last person said..working with paper will dry out your hands bigtime. Buy some vaseline or petroleum jelly ( some people say its greasy, but only if you glop it on. Its the best moisturizer by far). After getting out of the shower in the morning rub some all over your hands. Don't glop it on, apply just enough to have a thin layer over the surface of your skin. It will lock in the moisture from the shower.
Over time the extremes you described should go away as the old skin cells are replaced. You will still have some tendency towards dryness in your hands because of handling paper all day, but if you carry some sort of moisturizer with you it shouldn't be a major problem like it is now.

Don't think I'm trying to be funny but this is a real product.Crack Cream, you can buy it at wal mart. It works wonders, also you might try Witch Hazel Corn Huskers lotion. These are old remedies, but they work.

Eat more of the good fats from fish and nuts (those omegas3/6/9's). They supposedly help the skin and hair.

With a strong amount of certainty, Cornking, I can assume you simply drink the wrong drinks and don't drink enough spring water.
For the next 12 days I want you to drink no other drinks besides water. PERIOD.
Secondly, purchase an ORGANIC soap for your hands and one for the shower. Use a wash cloth and don't overhandle your soap.
Lastly, keep an eye out for what you're handling. I would be keen to see what your hands touch each day.

thanks everyone,
enter, i know i definetely dont drink enough water, so i have stepped the rehydration process. the strange thing is i switched from coffee to green tea about 3 weeks ago...but i doubt this could be related.
it has gotten better over the past couple days, at least the scabs are healing. i got some non-oil based moisturizer and it seems to protect better. Also, i pulled the ultra-sonic humidifier set up in the room i sleep in, the moisture may be a placebo effect but over all i sleep more comfortably and my skin itches less, but still, a doctor's visit might be beneficial.
