this is just a warning to those who use external hdd's for backup. i bought a external hdd because i wanted to format my computer to remove sp2 and the other clutter so i backed up my music (27,000+ files), photos, movies, programs i 'lost' the cd's for, and various other things on my external drive. popped in the recovery disk and formatted the drive. after it was done i open up my external drive to find the message "recovery partition, altering these files blah blah" and that it read as a 4g drive when it was really much larger than that. for some FUCKING reason the computer decided to format both the internal AND external drives and made my external drive a recovery partition. i never thought to unplug the drive (usb) before formatting but who the fuck would think it would make an external hdd a recovery partition as well! i know there's a lot of recovery programs out there but i don't want to pay and all the "free" ones i've found are out of date anyway careful formatting your drive with an external drive plugged in

Microsoft is well known for messing with other drives and partitions when installing windows. I believe it is done intentionally to try and wipe out dual boot systems. For example, when you run fdisk on a drive, and it says 'checking drive integrety' or whatever... it is actually writing a single byte of data to every single sector on the drive... not the partition, THE DRIVE. This means if you use microsoft fdisk to work on a drive that has valid partitions, the data will become corrupt on the valid partitions... but only 1 byte in 512 will be corrupt...
Thanks for the warning on the external drives. I hadn't known about that specific problem. Knowing microsoft, it doesn't surprise me.

i have a dvd burner just an external drive is nicer imo as it's a lot quicker and you don't have to keep buying disks when you change stuff or get new files (music especially, can't really keep it organized as easy with multiple dvd's) i have about 20g of stuff on dvds that got wiped out. then i got the external drive as i can transfer 20+ gigs in the time it takes to burn 4.7 and it's free after an inital investment.
seuss, i'm getting linux as i type. getting sick of windows shit, the main reason i formatted the drive to begin with was to get rid of sp2 and there various other "updates"

One of the screens should have been what partitions you wanted to delete, BUT, you might have had your hdd set up like a virtual drive to your c:/ .
I have a HP DVD Writer 630e. It is slow as hell because me computer doesn't have USB 2.0 .

have you touched the drive since then? I might be able to get you a program if you haven't touched the drive too much yet.

after backing up all my stuff to the external hdd i put the recovery disk in and restarted, my comp is always set to boot optical drive first, then hdd and that's it. it just asked if i wanted to do complete format or smart system recovery or something like that, i hit complete format and it went to work, never asked what partition or anything. i never setup the external drive, it's just plug and play. it dosn't have a disk or anything.

I have a recovery program that i use on my external 20GB hard drive... It's packed in a 1.3MB rar file. pm me with some kind of info on how i can get it to you, and i'll get it to you. just keep in mind it takes a long time to scan my 20GB drive on usb2.0...like maybe 20-30 minutes.

I use dvd-r to back up personal files (images, etc.) and application installers/profiles - I can put everything onto 3 dvd-rs. I'm not too worried about app. installers though because I can get most anything through just downloading - and there are usually updated versions. I dont really use too many cracked applications (only nero and macromedia studio) and just use opensource stuff out there (like firefox or openoffice or filezilla). I also keep a mirror backup of such files on a separate partition on my harddrive.
for my music (about 30 gigs), I keep everything on an external harddrive as well as my iRiver h340. I also have a few dvd-r backups of my music, but I only update these two or three times a year.
basically, my backups have backups
