Neither. Some chop the wave, and others vary the frequency. I'm not sure which method those use, but they're UL approved, and meet the requirements of the National Electrical Code article 430 for motor speed controllers. RR

Don't run any motor at less than 50% speed as it can ruin the windings and/or bearings. RR

I was speaking from nearly 40 years of experience in the electrical trade, and I don't sell controllers. RR

I was going to get one of these when I was thinking about making a flowhood. Pretty good price.

So if you were to do it again, you would go another route? Or am I misunderstanding you? I figured any 24x24x11.5 99.99% HEPA filter would have a really similar air resistance.

That seems like a great filter. As said above, you'll want a 500cfm @ 1" blower to handle it. RR

I have a ton of room in front of it and it works great on the orchid flasks .. its just I had to make sure I got the larger blower for it and the box I made isnt easily portable .. it weights a ton .. I cant pick it up by myself .. well I did but I paid for it the next day or two.. a 12x24 would be alot more portable and easier to lift or move around is all .. but the work space is half the size..

I just got a 1TDU2 for $120 recently. That'll work fine with that filter (24x24x11.5) I posted earlier correct? I'm hoping the blower isn't TOO strong. Then again, I can just block the intake a bit if the blower is too powerful right?

you should ask yourself what you want to do with it
I can't remember my exactly dimentions but i think mine is 24x32x4
its nice because you can do bags infront of it open them all the way up and have plent of room to hold a jar above it, and the length is really nice for setting jars and other equipment on the desk
one thing you should not underestimate if you make your own hood, is the design, the problem is it doesn't hit you untill you've already built it.
here's some tips if you do build your own
1. make sure you know where its going (permently) sounds like you have 2. make sure you design your desk/workspace 3. measure your doorways!!! 4. add the height of your stand, flowhood, blower, and anything above the blower (put it on paper make sure it all makes sense) 5. measure how tall your stand is going to be, then sit down on your chair and see if its at good working height.
6. lastly the thing that gave me the most trouble was the parts that the filter press against on the front, its hard finding a piece of wood thats like half a inch tall, so i cut it myself and it wasn't striaght, used it anyways and siliconed the hell out of it(it works but i wouldn't recommend it) i was trying to save money too
oh and make sure you find good wood to use, theirs alot out their and i found myself wondering the store like an idiot, i ended up getting glued aspine because it was cheap, then i found out why, you drop a piece on the ground and it falls apart
