Preparing jars a week ahead of time

I was wondering if it is okay to prepare your jars early--up to a week or so--before they are inoculated. If so, should the water be added at the time of sterilization, or should the water be added right before inoculation? Also, if the water was added at the time of sterilization then contamination could be noted and the jar disposed of before introducing the spores.

yes you can prepare them early
water should be added at the time of sterilization
you are more likely to weed out contams if you add the water at the time of sterilization. contams like water.

I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come alive from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind---and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression."

Adding water at the time of inoculation, not a good idea, add at time of sterilization. You can make and sterilize your jars ahead of time. Just keep them somewhere cool dark and clean until time to inoculate. Keep the lids tight and the tape on too until time to inoculate, you don't want them too dry out any which is the only proplem leaving them sitting for any period of time.

After you PC them, dont add anything to the jars but a little bit of sporewater or some sort of mycelium culture.

have you ever actualy read this guys site?
to learn the process, you have to buy a kit, a great deal of the info is a little off base, he refers to mushrooms as plants and aparently caters to people reading on a 6th grade level, a simple glance over his FAQ suggests that you'll be doomed to failure in not time flat

Wow,
The green mold is from a foreign spore that has drifted into your tray from the air and taken root in your soil. About the easiest way to get rid of this foreign contaminate is to take a clean teaspoon and carefully remove (and discard) as much of the soil as possible that has the green mold growing on it, then replace what soil was removed with fresh premoistened soil. This usually gets rid of the contaminate but if any more shows up just repeat the process.
I didnt know all you had to do was spoon out the "dirt" with the green mold in it to get rid of it.
Following this guys advice will get you a whole hell of a lot of something. And quick. Mainly everything BUT mushrooms, but hey...

Yeah, I cringe every time he refers to "plants" rather than a mycology term at shroomwizard.com. I wouldn't discount him completely. The honey in the water thing is interesting. I might try it. However, I am still sticking with the PF tek since it is my first time.

Honey tek and Karo tek along with many other liquid culture recipes are all here.
You can not partially discount someone. How do you know when to believe them and when not to? He has nothing worth looking at there since all of the things he talks about can be found here. And when you find them here they will be correct and more thorough that that BS. I discount him, and his website, COMPLETLY.

So, is the soil casing thing complete tripe? Don't get me wrong. I have way more credence in shroomery.org. Oh, and fungifun.org is a good link.

Dude, just follow the pf tek your first go around. Don't make your jars a week in advance unless you absolutely have to. That's just another week that contams have the opportunity to set in. You want to keep the window that contams have to set in as small as possible.
The absolute best advice I can give to a noob is to follow the tek's to the t until you understand mycology better.
Read and understand The Mushroom Cultivator and growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. Then you can experiment with new and different methods with a greater chance of success.

--------------------
My dad use to have this red truck that he would drive all the way to Moscow with. He actually got a really good deal on it from a friend of his. One day it had a strange noise coming from the trunk. A tapping noise that was on and off. He pulled over to check it out. When he got out of his truck, he stepped in a puddle, causing muddy water to splash all over his jeans. So he got back into his truck and decided to go back home.
