Hi,
Who here owns a telescope? I just want to know what sort or telescope should I buy if I wanted to view planets and constellations. Id really love to see Jupiter and Saturn in some sort of detail. Vote for your favorite planet! Is 575X enough power for this type of viewing ?

I have owned a telescope for 25 years. MOST of my adult life.
If your just interested in planets a small 90-120mm refractor is a good start.
DONT go to a dept store(Wal-Mart, Target...) for your telescope. Goi to a telescope DEALER (Mead, Orion, Celestron)
How much $$$ you looking to spend?

I have one of these. It can't do tracking, so it's not for astrophotography. I plan on getting this one hopefully by the end of this year. I've had my eye on it for a long time now.
Edit: Don't get that one.

DNKDY....those are both nice scopes. The first one is good for finding galaxies and nebula. The other one will be good for both planets and nebula.

Yes, but unfortunately I live in a very light polluted area. Not many very good dark spots around here any more. When I was younger it wasn't as developed around my town. The dobsonian is a hassle to lug out to a spot and set it up. I'd much rather have that refractor and get a drive for it so I can do some astrophotography at some point in time.

Whats the difference between refractor and reflector? What should I be looking at.

Refractor is just a tube with a lens and eyepiece. A reflector uses a series of mirrors to reflect light from the sky into the eyepiece.

There are several things to consider.
The reflectors are usually bigger than the refractor. The reflectors are made for DARK skies and for hunting real faint stuff (Galaxies and nebula) you will need a good star map to help with the hunt.
Refractors are usually smaller and are more forgiving of light polluted skies. They have a higher magnifying ability, and work good on planets and star clusters.
If your wiling to spent upwards of $700 you can geta good refractor for that price. Check out Astronomics
or Orion telescopes
