Poppy Grow Problem
    #3746544 - 02/07/05 04:52 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Hello, it seems as if I may have some complications with my outdoor poppy grow.  I originally wanted to get them out at the very beginning of Spring, which is March 20th I think.  Now, it seems as if I will have to wait until around April 20th.  I know that getting poppies out late results in lower yields, but how detrimental will this be to my grow? :crying:

Thank you

It depends a lot on other things. How far north or south are you? How hot does it get in your summer? You could have a good crop starting that late depending.

In my area, people put their plants out at the mid to end of May. My summers can get hot and humid, we'll see low 90's (that's in fahrenheit). My latitude is 42N-43N.

Well that is good to hear. As long as I get to experience it once, it'll be worth it.

I will be growing Gigs and Persian Whites (both are poppies). My concern is they won't have enough time to settle in and/or start growing.

Sorry to thread jack and to be semi-ignorant, but will poppies grow well in Nebraska? we have long cold winters so I would need to plant in the spring, I would consider our summers hot but not arizona hot by any means.

You need to get them out early man, try your best. Late April just sounds too late.

Yeah, that's what I am worried about. I think April might be too late, but I haven't talked to anyone who has grown them out that late. I guess I could give it a try, but I don't want to end up wasting my time and money, just to see that the grow was a failure.

Edit: I will go searching around my area for some good soil, maybe with some luck I will find some. The soil here is pretty bad though, lots of clay.

i sewed a seed in late jul once and the result was a lettuce head the size of a lazyboy it was about to flower too but the freeze was comming and i had the bright idea to try to transplant it indoors.

need i say more?

anything planted june or sooner will most likely finish. i say start after the end of april and sew evry other week till july so you have several generations, use lots of dung and mix sandy soil well, plant one per square foot, maybe plant a few to make sure some germinate, but weed them out before competition occurs.

plant in evry conceiveable space. i find they appriciate tons of light. plants that are potted or over crouded will be much smaller and finish far sooner. but the big pods will come from the lovely giant lettuce heads.

perhaps to maximize yeald and limit overwatering, sew liberally among your big plants as they mature so that the spaces between will be filled with smaller faster growing plants, then water liberally and you wont worry so much about the opiod-killing effects of wet weather.

if you time it right i think youll have lots of large and small pods with a right respectable potency.
