Hey guys I was just wondering what the pronunciation for baeocystis, cyanecsens, semilanceata, and cyanofibrillosa are? All I know are the street names; for example: Wavy Caps, knobby tops, and liberty caps. Thanks

i like this thread, becuase i have questioned the correct pronunciation myself a couple times. The only thing i can contribute is cyanescens are called cyans for short and cyanfibrillosa are cyanofibs or just fibs.

Although not directly answering your question, the page has some great pronunciations.

I say sill-ossa-bee
sigh-ann-ess-enz
sigh-ann-o-fibe-rill-oas-a, oas like toast, fibe like fiber
semi-lan-see-ate-a
I've heard professionals pronounce some of the names in the list a couple posts up differently than they are listed there, so I don't think everyone agrees on correct pronunciations. as long as you can spell it and pronounce it somewhat I think people will understand though .

Pronunciation of Latin words can vary with the speaker and still be correct. There are several different forms of pronunciation of this "dead" language. Mycophiles should use this guide to biological Latin in order to pronounce the nomenclature of their favorite fungi. I have heard many different versions of the word psilocybe alone. As long as I can understand what Latin word the speaker is using, I consider it correct. http://mung.pittsfieldrr.net/Pronunciation.html

DH has got it right on all accounts. The pronunciation of Psilocybe has been disputed many times but I go with what Paul Stamets says.

This is very interesting. I learned Latin from a 70 year old priest. The pronunciations I gave were Ecclesiastical Latin, not biological Latin. It seems this 'dead' language has more than one dialect.
